The towing capacity is determined by the trailer’s dead weight. It does not include the tongue weight, which is included in the gross vehicle weight rating.-Because the Base and SE models have similar curb weights, and the Limited models are typically 100-200 lbs heavier than those, the weights in parenthesis refer to the curb weights of the Limited trims of the combinations on the far left.(I discovered after I created the above table that the 2013 cars were subjected to SAE J2807 towing testing, which resulted in the GCWR being reduced to between 9,800 and 10,000 pounds depending on trim.

The maximum towing capacity and gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) have not changed; it is just the GCWR that has been reduced.Furthermore, it is only available for the 2013 models.)

For instance, the base trim level, the LE, is powered by a four-cylinder engine with adequate torque to pull up to 1,500 pounds of cargo.Three of the most frequent things people tow that weigh up to 5,000 pounds are listed below to give you a better understanding of what the Highlander’s top trim level is capable of towing.

1. A Speedboat

In the case of the LE, a V6 engine is available for those who need to haul a bit extra weight. Safety Tips for Towing With Your Highlander XLE

  • Maintain a distance of at least four seconds behind the vehicle in front of you.
  • It is best not to accelerate quickly.
  • If you’re heading downhill, tap your brakes instead of slamming them to avoid overheating your vehicle.
  • Before leaving on your journey, make sure everything is in working order, especially your brakes and all of your fluids.
  • If you’re traveling for an extended period of time, check the tire pressure every time you stop.

What Is a VIN?

A VIN is an acronym that stands for vehicle identification number. It is comprised of 17 characters and serves as a vehicle’s unique identification number. The serial number of the vehicle is represented by the final six numerals. The vehicle identification number (VIN) is normally located on the dashboard on the driver’s side.Another location is the area where the door latches when the driver’s side door is closed. It will also be listed on the vehicle’s title, registration, and insurance cards, among other places.

What Can You Learn from a Vehicle Identification Number?

The vehicle identification number (VIN) may provide you with a wealth of information about the car. There are a variety of information available, including the vehicle’s model year, trim level, airbag type, and gross combined weight rating.Other information includes the chassis, transmission, and axle ratios. It is a fallacy that you may obtain personal information from a vehicle identification number (VIN).Despite the fact that it is linked to the vehicle’s title, any personal information is kept confidential.

Can You Look Up Towing Capacity by VIN?

Finding out your vehicle’s towing capacity by VIN is the most precise method of determining how much it can tow.The towing capability of different truck types, for example, might differ. There might also be disagreements between what is said in the vehicle handbook and what is stated by the dealership. You don’t want to take the chance of causing harm to your car, or even worse, if it’s towing anything too heavy.Looking up the towing capability of a vehicle by VIN gives you peace of mind. While the VIN does not clearly state how much weight a vehicle can tow, the gross vehicle weight rating (GCWR) does (gross combined weight rating).

Once you have the GCWR, you can use it to figure out how much towing capacity you have.Advice from the experts: Here are the finest crossover SUVs for towing.

How to Calculate Towing Capacity by VIN

To determine towing capacity based on a vehicle identification number (VIN), follow these steps:

  1. Calculate the vehicle’s curb weight before proceeding. This number should be located on the vehicle identification number sticker.
  2. You can estimate the weight of the passengers in the car, but you should base your estimate on the maximum number of people who might ride in the vehicle.
  3. Subtract the sum from2 from the vehicle’s gross combined weight rating. Once again, you may discover this information by checking up the VIN. Alternatively, look for it on the VIN sticker on the vehicle’s door.

The sum you obtain after completing 3 is the maximum towing capacity of your car.

Understanding Your VIN Sticker

Frequently, the label on a car that holds the VIN also provides additional crucial information. The terms that may appear on the sticker are defined in the following section.

GVWR

The term ″gross vehicle weight rating″ refers to the total weight of the vehicle. In other words, the greatest amount of weight that your vehicle is capable of transporting safely. The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) takes into account the curb weight as well as the weight of passengers, fuel, and luggage.

GAWR

Gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is an abbreviation for gross axle weight rating. This is the greatest amount of weight that can be supported by a single axle. The GAWR of a vehicle’s front and rear axles are typically different. The manufacturer is in charge of determining this weight.

GCWR

Gross combined weight rating (GCWR) is an abbreviation. The GCWR is calculated by multiplying the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of your vehicle with the trailer you’re towing. The combined gross vehicle weight rating (GCWR) is the maximum weight that the vehicle and trailer can safely tow.

Towing Capacity

The greatest amount of weight that your vehicle can tow while traveling along the road is known as its towing capability. It is important not to exceed this weight limit since it might cause harm to your car. As an example, if your towing capacity is greater than the maximum, your transmission may malfunction.

Payload Capacity

The greatest amount of weight that your vehicle can safely bear in addition to its curb weight is referred to as its payload capacity.Or, to put it another way, payload refers to the total weight of the goods you transport in your vehicle. It is critical to understand your vehicle’s towing capability before purchasing or hauling an RV.Being over capacity can result in thousands of dollars in damage, which can be quite costly.Additionally, it is critical for the safety of you, your passengers, and other motorists on the road. You should now be able to determine your towing capability by VIN with relative ease.

Check to be that you’re not hauling more than your car is capable of.Have you ever calculated this number using your vehicle identification number (VIN)?Keep in mind that the following information will assist you in determining how much towing power you require.

Step 1

Install the Class II tow hitch into the hitch receiver located on the rear bumper of the Highlander. Insert the steel pin through the holes in both the receiver and the tow hitch to secure the hitch in place, and then tighten the pin down. If required, tap the steel pin into place with a hammer to ensure it is secure.

Step 2

68-amp battery should be installed in place of the factory battery in the Highlander. If required, open the hood and pull the battery cover off with a flat-head screwdriver to prevent it from falling off. Remove the existing battery’s wire caps by unscrewing them and removing them. Using your hands, slide the new battery into position and re-screw the wire covers.

Step 3

The wire harness should be secured to the bottom of the Highlander’s rear bumper, immediately beneath the hitch receiver, with screws. To secure the harness in place, use the four 8-inch steel bolts and the adjustable wrench to tighten them down.

Step 4

To connect the rear brake lights of the Highlander to their respective fuses, connect two of the pin connections to each of the fuses. The fuses for the rear brake lights are positioned right above the rear wheel-wells on the passenger side of the vehicle.Twist the wires of the pin connections around each fuse and crimp them in place with your hands to ensure that they are securely fastened.

Step 5

Attach the last two pin connectors to the body of the wiring harness with the help of the wire nuts. These two-pin connections will be connected to the wiring of your trailer and will be used to activate the brake lights on the trailer. The adjustable wrench is used to remove the factory mirrors from the Highlander.Use the wrench to loosen the bottom of the mirrors, and then use your hand to detach the mirrors from the top.To install the tow mirrors, hand-tighten them into position before tightening them with the adjustable wrench.ReferencesTips Toyota or an aftermarket vehicle parts provider can provide you with the Class II receiver hitch, electrical harness, and tow mirrors that you need.

  • What You’ll Need to Get Started Tow hitch of the second class
  • Metal hammer, 6-inch steel pin, battery (68 amps), and wiring harness with 4-pin connections are all included.

The tow package (alternator, fan, trannies cooler, etc.) is not easily identifiable, so I thought I’d ask if there is one or two engine components that are easily identifiable and thus indicate the vehicle has the factory installed tow package: Is there one or two engine components that are easily identifiable and thus indicate the vehicle has the factory installed tow package? There are several other brands of automobiles where the VIN may be entered into websites (or the dealership’s system) and you can print out a list of all the factory extras. Is this something that Toyota Canada does as well?Thank you very much from a prospective HL owner.

Thank you very much from a prospective HL owner.Yanni Yes, this is a bit perplexing, and Toyota does not explain it very well in the Highlander brochure for the model year 2017.I’ve spoken with a number of salespeople from various Toyota dealerships who do not comprehend what I’m talking about. So don’t feel horrible about yourself. It is necessary to know the answer, though, before making a purchase of more than $30,000.Listed below is a news release from Toyota Corporate dated September 2016 that details the 2017 model year lineup: ″All Highlander V6 models are equipped with a towing kit that provides for a maximum towing capability of 5,000 pounds on all four wheels as standard.

A heavy-duty radiator with an engine oil cooler, a 200-watt fan coupling, a supplemental transmission oil cooler, and a 150-amp alternator are all included in the kit.″ The following is the link to the news release: Additionally, if you check at the lower right hand front end of the car, you will see the oil cooler. It is located just to the lower right of the radiator. This holds true for the LE as well, assuming you choose the V6 engine.A separate package is available for the Hybrid, which has a slightly lower towing capability than the conventional vehicle (see Highlander brochure).

I hope this has been of assistance. This information should be shown on the window sticker of each vehicle you purchase (5000 lb towing capacity and towing package).BA Posted 2,319 times since joining on April 13, 2014.At addition, by looking in the lower right hand front end of the car, you can see where the oil cooler is located, which is to the lower right of the radiator. What exactly is that MY for?On my 2014, the ″trans cooler″ is the only thing I notice in that place.

It IS, however, the transmission oil cooler. That information can be provided by more informed individuals. However, if it is there, there is a significant chance that you have the towing package and a towing capability of 5000 lbs.

Tow Package Toyota Highlander

Posted 4 times since joining on February 1, 2021.Discussion starter number one for February 1, 2021 What is the best way to tell if a Toyota Highlander is equipped with a tow package? To pull my 1000lb fiberglass trailer, I’m seeking for a V6 from 2014 to 2017, however there aren’t any available on the internet. There is no mention of a tow package everywhere I’ve looked.

Tow package is said to be standard on v6 models from 2015 and up.Is this something I can look for under the hood, or do I have to take Toyota’s word for it that this is the norm? Finally, what is the cost of the tow package if you purchase it separately and have it fitted at the dealership?Posted 3,455 times since joining on September 14, 2006.

The tow package consists mostly of a separate tranny cooler and an oil cooler, as well as a more powerful alternator, among other things. My 14 is an LE with a V6 and all-wheel drive. It was not included in the towing package. However, I installed a separate tranny cooler as well as an oil cooler.

The higher power alternator is mostly used for towing a trailer with attachments that must be functioning at the same time as the trailer is being towed.I didn’t see the use in having a more powerful alternator. If you are towing a pop-up trailer or a utility trailer, you will not require the higher power alternator. The trailer weighs only 1000 pounds, which is exceptionally light. It’s likely that you won’t even require the towing package.

There is no need to visit the dealer in order to take advantage of this option. This isn’t a difficult problem to solve.Locate a reputable transmission shop to do the installation of the tranny cooler. They should be able to include the oil cooler as well.Joined on September 29, 2019 with 21 posts What is the best way to tell if a Toyota Highlander is equipped with a tow package? To pull my 1000lb fiberglass trailer, I’m seeking for a V6 from 2014 to 2017, however there aren’t any available on the internet.

2016 HL LE Plus factory transmission cooler

I was doing some research on transmission coolers for my 2016 Honda HL LE With since I intend to tow my self-built small house (about 2000lbs plus passengers in car) in the future. Before, I was pulling it behind my Honda Odyssey, which proved to be a difficult task. When I looked at the site where I want to put the cooler, I was a little concerned.www.toyotanation.com Posted 4 times since joining on February 20, 2021.

Tow Prep Package Identification/Specs/Tow Ratings

To avoid having to explain this every time it comes up (it came up a lot in the 2nd gen, and it will start occurring here as the car sells), I’m creating a thread that looks just like the gen 2 forum. The general overview of everything will come first, followed by the specifics.Specs: -Only V6 Engines Are Available The towing capacity is 5,000 pounds and the tongue weight is 500 pounds.Rating -Extremely Heavy Duty Radiator The engine oil cooler and two 200 Watt cooling fans are standard equipment.

Oil cooler for the transmission, alternator for 150 amps, 4-flat lamp connection already preinstalled The ratings are based on the model and engine. What is the best way to tell whether I have it?The quickest and most straightforward method is to check for the transaxle oil cooler. This is simple; there is no need to crawl under the car or beneath the hood.

Simply go up to the front of the car and open the door.On the driver’s side, you should pay attention to the lower grill intake. If you look at the illustration below. The intake is shown by the yellow box.

The blue box is where the real cooler is located underneath the fog light, and it is made of plastic. The cooler, bracket, and air guide are all depicted in blue schematics. In the event that you glance in that aperture and notice a radiator, you have the tow prep package; otherwise, you are out of luck. What the box contains in actuality Is a Heavy Duty Radiator. This one is straightforward; it is simply a radiator with a huge fluid capacity.

It is merely a slight gain, and not a significant one.08 gallons or more (not a typo) -Oil Cooler for the Engine This is a straightforward coolant-to-oil cooler that is installed between the exhaust manifold and the block on the front bank. It’s the piece of equipment that’s sitting on the block, not the component that my hand is resting on (which is a section of the AC refrigerant line).-2x 200-watt cooling fans (optional) Another easy solution is to increase the power of the cooling fans.Instead of two 100-watt fans, there are two 200-watt fans.-Transmission Oil Cooler (optional) See the cooler’s model number above in the identification section; it is virtually the same as the one below, but with a different air guide.

It is connected in series with the ATF cooling loop of the radiator.A 150 amp alternator is required. As far as I can tell, 150A is standard equipment on all 3rd generation HLs.However, if it is not, it is most likely a 130A alternator, which is standard on the 2nd generation HL.

4 flat light connectors are already pre-wired.The automobile is PREWIRED for a 4-flat connection, which simply means that there are wires running in various directions. You don’t have any type of converter or anything like that on your computer or phone. You’ll need to purchase a lighting kit from either Toyota (PN: PT725-48140) or an aftermarket business to complete the installation.Look in the DIY sticky thread for the OEM installation instructions to get a better concept of what’s involved with this.At summary, the converter plugs into two sockets in the back of the car under the trunk panels, and the four flat connection connects to both sockets as well before exiting through a grommet in the trunk floor and connecting to the hitch.

OEM Tow Package Clarification

Posted 338 times since joining on June 29, 2008.Discussion starter number one on October 22, 2014.At this point, the Highlander is at the top of our list of potential SUV replacements, and for the time being it is truly the only option..We tow a 3200 pop-up, and I want to make sure I understand the tow package details before we leave the lot.

The salesperson I spoke with didn’t appear to know much, or he didn’t seem to inspire much confidence, despite the fact that we don’t buy or use this particular dealer in town.Correct, according to what I’ve read in other threads and the booklet, the LE plus does not come with the factory tow package on the V6.Can you elaborate?Initially, the salesman stated that all V6s came with the tow package, then clarified that only the LTDs did, and then stated that only the XLE and above models did.

The leaflet states that XLE and above are acceptable.Since I accomplished this with my Pilot, I am aware that aftermarket or even factory parts may be added to a non-factory tow package; but, I want the OEM this time around.Do the XLE and higher trim levels come with all of the factory towing equipment, with the exception of the tow hitch? So that’s something we’ll have to remember to include?

Having gone through the many posts on this site as well as the pamphlet, that is my best interpretation.I was just looking for some comfort that the LE plus was most likely out of the question.Even though the XLE is what we truly want, the LE plus would meet our needs if it came with the towing option.Thank you for taking the time to read this!139 posts since joining on October 14, 2014.

This video, which has a presentation from Toyota on the 2014 Highlander, demonstrates that the XLE or Limited are the models to choose.Take a look at this: Posted 245 times since joining on July 26, 2014.Correct, in the United States, the XLE and above models are equipped with a factory towing equipment. In contrast to the United States, where all V6 Highlanders (which means all, period; there are no 4 cylinders in Canada) are equipped with the tow prep kit.and, yes, the installation of a hitch and electrical harness is still necessary.Aftermarket or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) alternatives are available for these.

It appears that many people on this forum are opting for aftermarket hitches because of the features and/or cost advantages.164 posts since joining on June 15, 2011.The tow hitch and harness for my ’15 Hybrid Limited Platinum were available as an optional accessory.139 posts since joining on October 14, 2014.

The tow hitch and harness for my ’15 Hybrid Limited Platinum were available as an optional accessory.I believe the tow package is distinct in that it is what provides your car with the real mechanical capacity to tow the weight and keep itself cool, among other things. The hitch and harness are available as options, but the towing kit is included as standard. That is, at the very least, my understanding.11,817 posts since joining on April 5, 2010.Posted 338 times since joining on June 29, 2008.

On October 22, 2014, discussion starter number seven was posted.the following are the specifications for the tow package: Yes, you can add the components after the fact, but this is not an economically viable option.Simple things (such as transmission coolers) are simple to add, but larger alternators, larger radiators, and an engine oil cooler are not easily fee-able.That is exactly what I was hoping to get with the tow package: a larger alternator, radiator, and engine oil cooler, among other things.

04 Highlander – how to tell if has Factory Tow Package?

Date of Joined: Mar 26, 2008 Messages: 20 Discussion Starter: 1 Date of Joined: Jul 3, 2009 Hello, I have a 2004 Toyota Highlander 2WD with a V-6 engine that I purchased secondhand two years ago.Currently, I am towing a 5×10′ open utility trailer with a 3500/350(trailer/tongue capacity) hitch with a 9-point plug that I purchased from a local dealer.Specifically, I’m looking at purchasing a used Casita or Scamp travel trailer, which are 16′ to 17′ in length and made of Fiberglass. Some of the fiberglass trailer sites have a large number of individuals that tow these little single axle travel trailers with Highlanders without any difficulties at all.

Most people use a WDH as well as a sway bar, which is something I would certainly do.In light of the fact that the fiberglass travel trailer would be a significantly heavier tow vehicle, I’m investigating the towing capabilities of my Toyota pickup.I don’t know if it came with the factory tow package because I got it used, and I don’t have the original invoice because I acquired it second-hand.Do you have any suggestions on how to determine whether or not a Highlander is equipped with a factory tow package?

In addition, what exactly is included in the standard Highlander towing package? Is it necessary to install a transmission cooler depending on whether or not I have the factory tow package installed? If so, do you have any recommendations for me (I reside in Arizona)?Joined on October 20, 2006 with 483 posts.

An ATF cooler should be located on the driver’s side of the vehicle, underneath the front fender. If you have it, it means that the car is equipped with a towing package. The tow kit includes a larger radiator, an ATF cooler, and wiring to connect to the hitch.Mar 26, 2008 20 posts Discussion starter 3 Posted on Jul 6, 2009 Joined on Mar 26, 2008 20 posts Thank you for taking the time to respond.Everything else on the driver’s side near the wheel well is shown by the image I’ve supplied below.

The little rubber hose that connects this device to the radiator is located towards the bottom of the radiator, close to the bottom radiator hose.Because it is tucked down down there, I can’t see much more of it than what is seen in the photo. Is this some sort of transmission cooler that comes as part of a factory tow package, or something else entirely? Is it additional radiator cooling, or something else? What if this is something completely different? If it’s anything else, does anyone have any idea what it is?

Thank you in advance for any information you may provide.Thank you very much.Joined on October 20, 2006 with 483 posts.ATF cooler in series with the radiator is what you see there!

2006 Highlander Limited Tow Pkg. Confusion.

Joined on July 18, 2007 with 1 post Discussion starter on July 18, 2007 with 1 post My girlfriend has a 2006 Highlander, which did not come equipped with a towing option. To summarize a long story, She chose not to go with the towing option when we purchased the vehicle since the towing model was over $800 more expensive than the non-towing model.Initially, I felt I was okay with it since, if we ever needed it, I could easily install a hitch and trailer wiring because I had done it on all of my previous vehicles. However, I quickly changed my mind.

I was completely wrong. So, we recently purchased a boat, and I intended to do the installation of a towing kit on the Highlander by myself.I went out and bought a hitch that fit perfectly, and then I set to work installing it.Everything appeared to be in order.

I went to the dealer to receive the wiring for the trailer that I had ordered, and the young man came out with a converter but no wires.I was disappointed. So, after seeing that it is available as an attachment for the trailer hitch, I placed an order for it.This is the point at which I become perplexed.

Because my vehicle did not come prewired for the towing package, the dealer’s expert is unsure whether or not I require both the converter and the wiring at the same time.As a result, I purchased the wire without the converter. Is it necessary for me to use the converter or not?I’d want to get to the bottom of this once and for all, and find out whether or not I really need the converter in the first place, given that her vehicle did not come with the towing package to begin with, and that I’m adding it after the fact anyhow. As I already mentioned.

But, before I dive into this and give myself any more hassles by using a converter, do I need the wire with the 4 holed plug that fits somewhere, and the trailer end of the 4 holed plug to begin with?Posted 2,581 times since joining on September 11, 2006.I ordered my 06 HL Ltd with the Tow package (TO-$160 MSRP) and Hitch (DH-$430 MSRP) because it was significantly less expensive to do so at the time of purchase than it would have been to later add the tow hitch/reciever, wiring, converter, transmission cooler, heavy duty alternator, power steering cooler, heavy duty radiator, and high amp fan coupling. As you can see, you get a lot more than just a tow hitch for your money with this purchase.I paid the invoices for both of these selections. These two extras are still worthwhile, even at the higher price of $590 MSRP when purchased separately.

As you said, you were given a price of $800 for these two options. For your information, the Toyota factory configuration provides for a towing capability of 3500 lbs.without putting undue pressure on the engine, transmission, or other components. The V6 HL is only capable of towing 2000 pounds when equipped with the (TO) Tow Package and a standard tow hitch.

Check the weight of your boat before you go!In fact, when I priced the setup before ordering my HL, I discovered that it would have cost well over $2k to replicate the entire OE Tow package in components alone. In addition, the fit of aftermarket tow hitches/receivers did not sit well with me.To be quite honest, I’m not sure what your true questions are here!Yes, a converter is required if you want your trailer lights to function properly. There are, however, additional components that make up the ″Tow Package″ as well.

In contrast to the ″Tow Package,″ the hitch is a separate item that is not included.Furthermore, the Tow package is a Factory-Only Installed Option that includes a variety of extra components. Are you acquainted with the components you’ll be working with?LT
