How To Tell If Sienna Has Towing Package?

To check if your Sienna has a towing package, simply look under the hood and check the size of the radiator. Vehicles equipped with a tow package have a larger radiator, alternator, and transmission oil cooler to prepare for the extra weight that it will have to handle when towing.

How To Tell If The Sienna Has A Towing Package

It is easy to determine whether or not your Toyota Sienna is equipped with a towing package by following these simple steps:

    1. Make a note of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), which is normally located on the inside of the driver’s side door, and then contact your dealership to inquire about it. They should be able to run it through a database that tells them whether or not the towing software was previously installed.

What Does The Toyota Sienna Tow Package Come With?

    • When you acquire a Sienna that comes with a tow package, you can expect to receive the following items as part of the package: The following items are included: a heavy-duty battery, an engine oil cooler (coolant), wiring (trailing), a transmission cooler, a 130-amp alternator.
    • Unless you have all of the items listed above installed in your car or included in your package, you do not have a tow preparation package for your vehicle. On most later Siennas, you can tow up to 2000lbs (1000kg), which is around one ton, which is still a reasonable amount of weight. What exactly weights a ton that you could tow, you may wonder. Some items that weigh roughly one ton are listed below in a brief summary: Humpback whale calves in their first year
    • 73 gold bullion bars
    • an adult male polar bear
    • a young giraffe
    • and other animals
    • Although we hope you will not be towing any of the equipment listed above, you may pull smaller objects such as a small trailer, dirt bikes, a small fishing boat, two snowmobiles or jet skis, and a motorbike with no problems. Depending on the kind of adventures and road trips you want to have in your Toyota Sienna, you may not require the maximum towing capacity of 3500lbs. However, if outdoor traveling is something you’re interested in and want to include your children in, a towing prep package may be the best option for you. Here are a few examples of what you can tow with 3,500 pounds: A giraffe the size of an adult
    • three saltwater crocodiles that are fully grown
    • For those who prefer not to pull wildlife, you can tow something like a small vacation trailer or a small camper.
    • A second little vehicle
    • The use of a huge trailer to transport jet skis, dirt bikes, or snowmobiles
    • Trailer for camping

Why You Shouldn’t Tow Without A Towing Package

    • What if I told you that towing big goods without a tow package or your Toyota Sienna might cause serious damage to your vehicle? By directly placing additional and unforeseen strain on your gearbox, you run the danger of overheating the vehicle and causing some major engine troubles to develop. Towing capability is limited to 2000lbs on most Toyota Sienna trims unless you have ordered a tow package or acquired a Sienna that comes standard with a tow package that can haul up to 3,5000lbs. We strongly advise you to verify with the dealership about towing capacity and specifics before hauling anything in order to avoid causing needless damage to your car. Some pointers for keeping your car safe when towing are as follows: Do not exceed the speed limit
    • your vehicle is already working hard enough to carry the additional weight.
    • Never brake too quickly since your stopping distance may increase while you are hauling a large weight
    • always brake with plenty of time left
    • It is possible that you may need to make wider turns and utilize your signals.
    • Check that your fluid levels are adequate and ready for a heavy pull – they must be sufficient to keep your engine and radiator operating at a cool temperature.
    • Check the condition of your tires and replace any that are damaged.

    Final Thoughts

There are several methods to determine whether your Toyota Sienna is equipped with a standard or optional tow package, and I always recommend double-checking before towing for the first time. You may look for the vehicle identification number (VIN), look under the hood of other vehicles, phone your dealership, or go through your sales documentation to find the information you need.Toyota Siennas come from a long tradition of dependable and durable cars, and towing when you don’t have a tow package might significantly reduce the lifetime of your Sienna’s engine and suspension.

    1. Is there a towing option available from Toyota for 2021?
    2. Otherwise, just call or go online to look for a new dealer is all that’s required.

Yes, the Siennas for 2021 will only be available in hybrid form. The 2.5L four-cylinder engine from the 2020 Highlander Hybrid will be used. There will be no longer be a V6 option.Joined on February 9, 2008 and has 14,100 posts.Toyota has made an interesting move in this regard.Rated for a maximum weight of 3,500 lbs.

The majority of Sienna owners on the discussion site cite bike racks, jet ski and kayak trailers, and other small boats, among other things, and a handful are planning on towing simple pop-up camper trailers as well.Started a discussion on Dec 11, 2020 with 31 posts and is the discussion starter for that day.The trailer in question is a pop-up tent trailer. It weighs less than 2000 pounds empty, and about 2500 pounds loaded. With the Harbor Freight tow dolly, I can easily push and drag it around the perimeter.

    2. I had no problems with the Accord, so I don’t see why I couldn’t do the same with the Sienna.
    3. Except that, despite the fact that Toyota displays a factory tow package as an option, I have been unable to locate a dealer who can obtain one for me.
    4. Has anyone ever discovered a way to place an order directly with Toyota?
    1. However, we would like the extra room and features that the Sienna provides.
    2. Although the Highlander has 220,000 miles on it and I do not expect it to fail anytime soon, we would prefer the more space and amenities that the Sienna provides.
    3. And if we’re going to spend $50,000 on a new automobile, we’re not going to settle for anything less than the exact configuration we desire.

    5. That’s reasonable.
    6. Due to the Sienna’s 4-cylinder engine, there have been several concerns regarding its lack of power in its current form.

When it comes to normal driving, that’s not much of an issue, but with towing, who knows. You should be able to place an order with Toyota directly through any dealership.I am confident that you will be able to locate someone who is eager to assist you.It may even be easier for you to bargain with dealers because you can ask for their quotation on the exact same car that is now being constructed, rather than what is already on one dealer’s lot compared to another dealer’s lot, where the cars may not be exactly the same.Posted 31 times since joining on December 11, 2020.

We just purchased a 2021 Sienna and were told that the hitch will be sent soon, but no one knows when that will happen.I phoned Toyota today, and they informed me that any inquiries should be directed to the local dealers. While it is possible to create a Sienna online with numerous hitch packages, no one will tell me when those hitch packages will be made accessible. This is really annoying.

Also, keep in mind that the roof rails on the vans are not standard. In order to use the XLE, you must purchase the XLE Plus package. We purchased a van two weeks ago that did not have rails, and the dealership did not have a remedy, so we returned the vehicle.Another really irritating experience, this time due to the fact that you may design the vehicles with a variety of alternatives on the internet.

Another thing to bear in mind is the following. If you are purchasing a hybrid vehicle, be aware that the environmentally friendly engine does not match the cup holders. As a family of three young boys, we load the van with reusable bottles for road trips and everyday use.All of the cup holders at the front, with the exception of two, are meant to accept soda cans, fast food cups, or single-use bottles.Almost all of the 20-ounce refillable water bottles we have are too large to fit in the holders.Posted 31 times since joining on December 11, 2020.

Discussion Starter 11 December 31, 2020 Discussion Starter We located a dealer who agreed to provide us a 2021 with a tow hitch, but they haven’t delivered the goods as of this writing.I’d be willing to spend $50,000 on this vehicle, but only if I could have exactly what I want, which isn’t something Toyota doesn’t provide on their website. So far, my experience has been that the dealers are just interested in selling what they already have in stock and have no interest in obtaining what we desire.Toyota has left me feeling a little underwhelmed right now.But if they don’t want to take my money, I’m confident that someone else will.

I want a 2021 Toyota Sienna to replace my Toyota Highlander, which is still in excellent condition after 221000 miles. However, I may have to settle with the smallest diesel Sprinter van available instead. It’s possible that $50000 is more important to me than Toyota. This hasn’t been a really pleasant experience.Posted 26 times since joining on January 7, 2021.

After all, you initiated the ‘towing’ thread! Here are my questions, information, and so on: The ability to tow my little pop-up camper is critical in determining whether or not to purchase the Sienna.I have a 2004 with 247K miles on it, and I really adore it.We are interested in the Towing Preparation Package, which includes the engine oil cooler, fan, and a bigger radiator, just to be clear.I couldn’t find any information on how much it will cost.

    • I would also ‘order’ it and wait, as my previous vehicle is still in good operating shape.
    • And I’m assuming we’d have to pay extra for them to come out and install the hitch and harness?
    • I went to the dealer for the first time to have a quick look around.
    • When I inquired about towing, he had no idea what I was talking about and behaved as if they weren’t even capable of towing.
    • How could he be that illiterate, or is it really them attempting to get you to buy from the bunch rather than place an order?
    • I agree – the new Sienna is an expensive vehicle, and I, too, want to ensure that I have all I need to turn it become my next 200K-mile vehicle.
    • (We’re probably not going to get it up to that level now that the kids are gone and we’re not travelling across the nation every summer to visit National Parks and other attractions.
    • ) However, I am not prepared to give up my towing capabilities, and I hope to be able to bring the camper out even if it is only when my daughter comes home to visit.

    5. Where did you discover that there is a towing preparation bundle that has all of these items?
    6. Everything I’ve discovered so far (apart from responses to people’s inquiries) says that the towing kit consists of a wire harness and a hitch.
    1. In the engine compartment, there is nothing special.
    2. My experience with two different dealerships was identical – the ″bundle″ consists just of a hitch and wiring harness (and removal of rear kick sensor).
    3. I, on the other hand, take their information with a grain of salt because they don’t know enough about the year 2021 just yet.
    4. Joined on December 11, 2020, with 31 posts, and became a discussion starter on January 8, 2021.
    5. I might be able to provide some answers.

The ″tow package″ is standard equipment on all Siennas. This item includes the transmission cooler as well as wiring for trailer lights, continuous power, reverse light, and electronic brakes for a 7 pin trailer plug (which is not included). The locations for the required fuses are marked, but the fuses themselves are not present.Despite the fact that the 4 or 7 pin trailer socket is not present, a connection for the trailer wire socket may be found on the wiring harness. When you purchase the optional ″tow package,″ you will receive the fuses as well as the trailer connector.Another available item is the tow receiver, which includes a drawbar and a hitch.

    1. One option would be to purchase a trailer from Curt or e-trailer and install it yourself, or to drive the car to U-Haul and have them install a trailer on your behalf.
    2. On all models of Sienna save the most basic, the toe-kick sensor that automatically opens the back hatch interferes with the tow receiver, which is a major inconvenience.
    3. Toyota offers a workaround, but you’ll have to beg, plead, and battle with them to get them to do what you want.
    4. In that case, you could just accomplish all of this yourself, although I am hesitant to do so.
    5. Considering that I am going to invest $50,000 on a new automobile, I don’t want to put my warranty at risk in any way.
    • It’s not worth it to me to take the chance that they would try to deny my warranty claim because I fitted an aftermarket tow bar if the gearbox goes bad.
    • Toyota should take care of everything.

    • It has been a month since we first attempted to purchase a 2021 Sienna, but we have finally been successful in obtaining a factory tow bar through a dealership.

    5. Ours is currently being ordered/allocated, but they informed us today that they were unable to obtain the color we desired.

That is correct – for $50k, it had better be in the color we want. They are requesting that the color be switched once more – evidently someone at Toyota believes that we should be given a different color?Anyway, they installed the tow hitch, which I planned to do later because the kick sensor has been disabled/removed from the vehicle.

So, do you happen to know if it has been removed?Or are you simply unable to work? And with whom do I plead – is this something that the dealer can put back on after it has been received, or does it have to come all the way to the dealer and it will not be possible to get it working again because it has been removed? Thanks Posted 26 times since joining on January 7, 2021.

All right – I believe this has clarified a few things for me (thx Joe Cool).I was unable to determine from the Toyota website whether the Towing Prep Package was standard on all vehicles or if it had to be ordered separately as an option.Yes, that’s exactly what I saw on the website as well: ″Towing capacity 3500 lbs, with towing prep package: engine oil cooler, plus heavy duty radiator and fan.″ So that’s fantastic. We simply need the optional parts: Tow Hitch Receiver and Wire Harness ($840!); Trailer Ball Mount (the hitch) ($125); and Ball ($20) to complete the setup. The last two items can be obtained almost anywhere.

So, why are dealers having such a difficult time (or making it difficult for buyers!) obtaining a van with a tow bar/receiver installed? Is it possible to get that somewhere else as well?Because the XLE does not have a hands-free lift gate, the sensor is not an issue, at least until you choose for the Limited model.Toyota will almost certainly install a 1 1/4″ receiver, and I’d prefer a 2″ receiver anyhow.

Please accept my thanks once more for the clarification regarding the ″Prep″ equipment being already fitted in all of the vehicles. After all, I suppose I don’t have to rule out the Sienna out of the running.2 posts since joining on January 19, 2021 I’m new to the site, and this particular issue – Sienna Towing Preparation Package – is the source of my greatest anxiety at the moment. This is my worry too.

As stated in the spec sheet on Toyota’s website, the Sienna will only tow ″up to″ 3500lbs when equipped with the ″towing prep package,″ which includes a heavy-duty radiator and fan, as well as an oil cooler and a heavy-duty alternator. Then they tell us that there is no way to order the package.Certainly not in the way that I can see on their website. They only provide a hitch as an option.I sought clarification from a salesman at a nearby dealership, who proved to be completely incompetent. After that, I emailed Toyota and received a response, but it was a rambling, incomprehensible nonanswer from someone who clearly didn’t comprehend what I was trying to do.

Now I’m in a bind.Towing is something I want to do, and the tow prep package is something I want if the spec sheet states I need it to pull the rated weight.I might be able to provide some answers.

    1. The engine oil cooler, heavy-duty radiator, and fan were included in the two-preparation package for the United States.
    2. In the 2013 U.S.
    3. spec basic and LE Siennas, it was optional and appeared to be scarce; nevertheless, it became standard on all Sienna grades in the United States for the 2014 model year.
    • The engine oil cooler is located on the ″front″ of the engine (the side that is closest to the front).
    • The accompanying photo from fibber2 shows a Sienna from the second generation, however the engine oil cooler is located in the same location on the Sienna from 2011 and after.
    • If you provide the VIN, I would assume that Toyota customer support will be able to assist you.
    • According to the United States specification Sienna, a transmission cooler is standard equipment and is not included in the tow prep package – I’m not sure about the Canadian specification.
    • The transmission cooler is located at the bottom of the radiator, and the oil lines that connect it to the transmission are located at the top of the radiator.

    3. According to the 2011-13 US Brochures (I’m not sure about 2014), the towing prep kit is included with the SE, XLE, and Limited models.

    • They do, in fact.

For all trims, the towing capability is simply stated as 3500 pounds (except the ill-fated 4 cyl). The tow preparation kit is not even available as an option.Joined on December 20, 2015 with 17 posts.I saw another discussion in which it was stated that 2015 AWD versions in the United States would not have the oil cooler, and therefore would not have the 3500lb towing capacity.after which it would be qualified for towing 1500 pounds.I just had a look beneath the hood of my 2015 AWD LE, which I purchased in North Carolina yesterday.

and the Oil cooler housing and lines are clearly in place, as demonstrated in this post, which is quite useful.Despite my expectations, I was relieved to discover it, especially given that I was not aware of the problem until after I had already acquired the vehicle.I could understand if the AWD hardware had not been ″tested″ or if it had not been qualified for higher towing capacities. The difference in gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) alone would not account for the 2,000-pound disparity.2015 Sienna Limited Premium (Limited Edition) Registered on Mar 9, 2011 with 5,639 posts.

    • In my hunt for the perfect Sienna, I’ve been referring to this website.

It’s quite beneficial. That is a very useful website, but, in my experience, it cannot be used to determine whether a generation 3 Sienna is equipped with the tow prep package when it is standard equipment on a specific Sienna trim or when it is standard equipment on all Sienna in a particular model year, as I have described above. The VIN lookup only displays items that are not mandatory.I just went through every Sienna from 2011 to 2013 that is presently for sale on eBay Motors and discovered just one that had the tow prep option installed.Take a look at the following VIN to see how it’s displayed in the database: 5TDKK3DC8BS152049 Because it was standard equipment on my 2014 Sienna Limited FWD, the tow prep package does not appear on the VIN lookup for that vehicle.

All of this was my experience while purchasing my vehicle.Speaking with the parts department – rather than with service or sales – was the most definitive step I took.Parts can look up your vehicle’s VIN and determine whether or not the oil cooler/transmission cooler is present.I spent hours talking to service and sales departments at several dealerships (who would give me answers based on the specifications on the window sticker). It is not stated on the original window sticker for my van, and I have the original window sticker for my van.

    5. Because the trailer has been stripped of practically all of its systems over the years, it should be a relatively easy haul.
    6. While trying to figure out precisely what is included in the Sienna Towing Package, I’ve come across various different lists of what is included.
    1. The local dealer parts guy declined to give me any component numbers since it is against Toyota policy, but after looking through his parts diagrams, he determined that the Towing Package for my 2017 includes a bigger radiator ($310) and a 180 Amp alternator.
    2. No one could tell him if the larger radiator was a direct replacement for the smaller one.
    3. Toyota, according to him, discontinued the installation of receiver hitches due to liability concerns over approach angles.
    4. Despite the fact that a receiver hitch and 4-flat trailer hookup kit are available for purchase on Toyota.com, these items are not included in the Towing Package.
    5. (With, for a lot less money, you can purchase a great extra high capacity DrawTite hitch and Tekonsha wiring harness from etrailer.com).
    1. CSF 3823 replacement radiator with extended 1.25″ core is available from RockAuto and other sources, and it is specifically mentioned for Siennas with and without the Tow Package.
    2. I’ve placed an order for one.
    3. It looks to be a straightforward plug-and-play installation.
    4. It does not appear that there are any additional hoses for the towing radiator.
    5. It is possible to find numerous comprehensive posts on upgrades of various types on the Siennachat group.

High transmission fluid temperatures have been noticed on this site, and they may serve as an encouragement to replace ATF more frequently and to slow down in extremely hot conditions.Even though aftermarket transmission coolers with thermostatic valves are a common installation, having a fluid temperature that is too low might be detrimental to the transmission.Possibly, this is why the transmission fluid cooler is water-cooled: to help warm up the fluid when it is chilly outside?Moving on, all we have to do now is slow down a little bit to improve the safety margin while hauling anything and make the automobile a little easier on itself.

Engine braking is used on the downgrades so that we don’t have to use the brakes at all.The only drawback to traveling at a slower pace is that the trip will be significantly longer.I mean, if we’re reading on the road, we’ll be able to get in an additional chapter or two before we arrive at our destination.

How to Tell If a Towing Prep Package Is Installed

Many automobiles are available with an optional two-prep package, which is quite popular. This add-on option is difficult to find, especially for people who aren’t sure what it is in the first place. The tow prep kit equips your car with a bigger radiator, alternator, and gearbox oil cooler, among other things. These devices ″prepare″ the vehicle to tow huge loads behind it, therefore reducing the additional stress placed on the vehicle’s engine.

    1. Make a visual comparison with other vehicles of the same make and model to determine the size of the radiator, which is a tell-tale indicator of a prep package if it is there.

    Step 1

Make sure your car is parked next to another of the same year and make as yours. Open the hoods of your vehicles. Try to visit a dealership and test drive several of the same automobiles, if at all feasible.

    Step 2

If your radiator, which is normally located at the front of the engine, is significantly larger than the others, you should investigate more. This is an obvious indication of the tow preparation kit.

    Step 3

Open the driver’s door of your vehicle and jot down the VIN code that may be located along the inner edge of the door.It is the VIN (vehicle identifying number) that serves as the car’s ″DNA.″ Make a note of this code and bring it with you to the dealership that sells your car’s make and model.Inquire with the dealer about running a check on the vehicle using the VIN to discover any factory fitted extras.Examine the purchase agreements and supporting documentation, if any are available.

    2. Hello, everyone.
    3. We recently acquired a 2015 Toyota Sienna LE FWD for our family.

In addition, we want to pull a camper that weighs 2,000 pounds. In accordance with a recent talk with our local Toyota service manager, our car is capable of towing a maximum weight of 3,500 pounds. The towing package, on the other hand, is not included.Furthermore, a Toyota OE gearbox cooler is not available as an aftermarket accessory.Last but not least, adding an aftermarket cooler may result in the voiding of our warranty.

My first issue is whether or not it is safe for us to tow our camper. And then there’s the question of whether we should put in a transmission cooler (even if it destroys our guarantee).I truly appreciate everyone’s willingness to spend their time with me.Best, Matt.Joined on May 18, 2009, with 949 posts in total. If I remember properly, all 2015 Siennas are equipped with the towing kit, which allows them to pull up to 3500 lbs.

In the past, the towing package consisted of of an oil cooler, which was the only thing it did.For the 2015 model year, this is now standard. There is no need to install an auxiliary transmission cooler because the transmission cooler (which is a component of the radiator) was intended to handle the increased workload. Please keep in mind that the Sienna is powered by the same V6 engine as the Highlander, which has a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs.

    6. Good information on this is difficult to come by, but for the most of the years that the 2GR-FE engine has been in use (2007-2016), the availability of an engine oil cooler has been the most significant factor in determining whether the engine is tow competent or not.
