Cityhood for Atlanta’s Buckhead? Not so fast, says Morgan County’s Buckhead

  • The proposal for cityhood in Atlanta’s Buckhead district, put out by a shadowy foundation, has piqued the interest of some strong opponents, including the mayor, major business organizations, and numerous elected officials.
  • However, the current Morgan County city of Buckhead, which is 60 miles east down I-20, may prove to be the most difficult challenge to overcome.
  • ″Ask them to take a step back.
  • When told of the Atlanta group’s ambitions, Morgan County Commissioner Bill Kurtz, whose district contains the city, responded with a happy ″We got the charter,″ he said.
  • The town of Buckhead, as it is known locally, was established in 1908 and is a dot on the map with a population of around 225 people.
  • According to Kurtz, the town consists of four or five buildings, a Baptist church, and a few of rural businesses.

″It’s a really little town,″ says the author. There is no crime in this area.Simple and uncomplicated,″ he explained.

  1. Buckhead also has a mayor, Ricky Walker, who did not reply to requests for comment; when a call was placed to City Hall, a fax machine answered the phone.
  2. However, Kurtz believes that the mayor and the Town Council will not vote to change the name of the town in favor of some immigrants from the major metropolis.
  3. As Kurtz described it, the town is ″a very lovely small town that is extremely close-knit, and they’re proud of the fact that they are a city.″ ″This has come up on a number of occasions in the past.
  4. This is something I’m not sure how the Buckhead, Atlanta group thinks they can pull off, because we have the charter.″ Buckhead, a suburb in Atlanta, has roots in a rural region that stretches back to the 1830s and was integrated into the city as an unincorporated community in 1952.

Both locations claim to have gotten their names from a hunter who killed a deer.Locals in Morgan County have been irritated by the issue of their names being same for a long time. The Summer Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 were a whirlwind of uncertainty on a grand scale.According to Kurtz, ″a lot of folks traveled through Buckhead and Morgan County believing they were heading to Buckhead, Atlanta, and it became very humorous there for a time.″ Kurtz has a good grasp of both sides of the argument.

″It’s ironic because I was born and reared in the Atlanta neighborhood of Buckhead. The fact that I went to Garden Hills Elementary and everything else,″ he explains His retirement from banking to Morgan County in the 1990s was prompted by his desire to go hunting and fishing in the area, and he currently resides a few miles outside of the city of Buckhead.″It was a little place back then,″ Kurtz, who was born in 1945, said of his upbringing in the 1950s.

  • As I pull up to the location, I simply cannot believe what I’m witnessing.
