YUKON.

Just west of Oklahoma City, Yukon is located in the center area of the eastern side of Canadian County on the border with Oklahoma. As well as Interstate 40, the town is bisected by State Highways 4 and 92, which are also known as ″historic Route 66.″ The community is located just north of the historic Route 66 landmark. The town was created in 1891 by A.N.Spencer.

Spencer, who was associated with the Choctaw, Oklahoma, and Gulf Railway, came to a deal with Minnie Taylor and Luther S.Morrison in which Spencer agreed to plot a townsite and build railroad tracks through the town in exchange for half of the land lots. When Taylor and Morrison, who had gained the area through homesteading when the Unassigned Lands were opened for settlement in 1889, deeded the land to Spencer, who subsequently platted it before deeding half of the lots back to Taylor and Morrison, the land became known as Spencer’s Land.As anticipated, the railway company constructed its route through Yukon in 1891, forcing the town of Frisco, which had a population of 1,000 people, to close its doors.Beginning about 1898, Yukon began to draw a sizable number of bohemians who settled there.Following World War I and the partitioning of Bohemia into Czechoslovakia and Moravia, the Yukon Bohemians used the name ″Czechs″ to distinguish themselves from other ethnic groups.

This legacy is still widely acknowledged today.Yukon has been designated as ″the Czech Capital of Oklahoma,″ and the city has celebrated Czech Day in October every year since 1966.The historic Jan Zizka Lodge Number 67, also known as Czech Hall, is located two miles south of town and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places with the number NR 80003258.It is a concrete reminder of the Czech presence in the area.Yukon soon developed into an urban hub for farmers in the surrounding region due to its closeness to lush farmland.

By 1905, the municipality had established a formal library system, and by 1927, a dedicated public library building (NR 84002977) on Elm Street had been completed. The Yukon Mill and Grain Company was a dominant force in Yukon’s industry for many decades. When the mill was founded in 1893 as a small elevator, it quickly grew to become the largest flour facility in the state, as well as the whole Southwest, after being purchased by John F.

Kroutil, Frank L.Kroutil, and A.F.Dobry in 1903.

  • During the 1930s, the mill had a daily production capacity of two thousand barrels of flour.
  • After selling their mill to the Kroutil family in 1933, the Dobry family opened a second mill across the street, which was appropriately named Dobry Mills.
  • In the following decades, both mills were sold to larger firms, with Shawnee Mills acquiring the Yukon Mill and Grain Company and Mid-Continent purchasing the Dobry Mills, respectively.
  • The Mid-Continent Company bought the historic Yukon Mill and Grain Company in 1972, and the mill is still in operation on the city’s Main Street.
  • The historic Mulvey Mercantile is also located on Main Street (NR 82003670).
  • Construction of the general store began in 1904, and it remained the largest retail enterprise in Yukon until it was forced to close by the Great Depression in the 1930s.
  • Because of its connection to U.S.
  • Highway 66, the major street in Yukon has gained even more recognition.

Route 66, which was officially established in 1926, was a significant traffic corridor through the town for decades before being replaced by the four-lane Interstate 40 in the 1960s.Interstate 40, like its predecessor, has created a commercial vacuum, luring restaurants, petrol stations, and other businesses to the off-ramps that serve the highway system. The commercial strip near the major Yukon exit, which was renamed Garth Brooks Boulevard in the 1990s in honor of one of the town’s favorite sons and has now grown to encompass the whole south side of the Interstate, has extended to include the entire south side of the Interstate. In the years after the turn of the twenty-first century, there was a significant increase in building activity.Another significant event that occurred during the 1960s was the annexation of the surrounding region by the cities of Yukon and Oklahoma City.Oklahoma City took practically all of the land in and surrounding Yukon, prompting the city’s leaders to annex any remaining territory in the area.

Yukon soon grew in popularity as a result of its closeness to Oklahoma City, which attracted a large number of workers looking for a more relaxed work atmosphere.Apart from spurring extensive housing growth, notably on the south and east sides of town, the city’s commercial development also benefited significantly from the expansion of the economy.Yukon was founded in 1901 and had an estimated population of 830 people by the time it became a state in 1907.Three years later, the population of the town had increased to little more than one thousand, and the figure remained stable until 1920.By 1930, the population had increased by over one-third, to a total of 1455 people. The 1940 population was 1,660 people, indicating that the city was still growing on a modest scale.

During the 1940s, Yukon saw moderate development, with the number of people growing to 1,990 in 1950, according to official statistics. The population increased by more than a thousand in 1960, reaching 3,076, according to official figures.Over the next two decades, Yukon developed into a ″bedroom″ community, with a population that was more than five times larger than it was in 1960.When the town was founded in 1970, there were 8,411 people living there; by 1980, the population had more than quadrupled to 17,112 people.

The population reached a plateau in 1990 at 20,935, then a minor growth of little more than one hundred people pushed the total to 21,043, according to the 2000 census. The 2010 census revealed a significant increase to 22,709 people.Throughout its history, the Yukon has had a number of different newspapers. The Yukon Register and the Yukon Weekly first appeared in print in 1893 and 1894, respectively. In the latter case, it continued until 1900, when it merged with the Yukon Sun newspaper.

It was 1923 when the Yukon Sun was replaced by the Yukon Oklahoma Sun, which continued to print under that name until 1966.The Yukon Review began publication in 1967 and has been the town’s official newspaper to this day.The council-manager system of governance is used in the city.Cynthia Savage is an American actress and singer who is best known for her role in the film The Great Gatsby.Check out these other articles: CZECHS, IMMIGRATION, and SETTLEMENT PATTERNS.
