How to Package an Etsy Order
This post contains affiliate links, so please keep that in mind when reading it.) If you look at my Etsy Shop right now, you will see that I have only 95 (or possibly more) sales to my credit.I am not an expert on Etsy, and I have only been in business for a couple of years.I make every effort to keep it stocked, but in the midst of the blessings of full-time motherhood, that is simply not possible at this time.In August of 2015, I joined Instagram, where I discovered a friendly community of other makers who were all selling their handmade wares.I quickly discovered that there is a standard way to package an Etsy order, which I had not previously realized.
When I first opened my Etsy shop, I had no idea that this standard of being personable, creative, and somewhat picture perfect had been established. At the beginning of my small business, packaging up my Etsy orders was one of my least favorite tasks.I had to go to the post office or Target and buy an oversized envelope to fit a quilted pillow cover. In order to tie up the pillow cover I had recently sold, I found some cute ribbon leftover from my wedding that I used to tie it up.I dug through an old box of thank you notes in order to write a note to my buyer.I didn’t have a business card with me at the time.
There was nothing that was coordinated or matched.I tried my best to write the address on the outside of the envelope as neatly as I could. Then I piled my two small children into the car and drove to the post office to mail my package.
If you know me well at all, you know running errands is not my thing.I don’t enjoy carting children around and buckling and unbuckling car seats just hoping they’ll wait like perfect angels in the never ending line at the post office. Then I see these Instagram posts about ‘Happy Mail,’ and I’ll never forget one day when a fellow maker said packaging up her Etsy orders is one of her favorite tasks.Packing up my order took two errands and an hour of scrounging around the house for cute crafty items.Even without an immense amount of orders going out, I learned I needed to streamline a process and stock a few supplies.Otherwise, packaging up a single order was going to be an entire day’s process when it involves three little ones.
1.First off, learn to print your shipping labels off using Etsy’s shipping options at home.(It’s MUCH easier walking your package out to your mail box for the mail man to pick up than running an errand to the post office.) You need to have a digital kitchen scale, printable labels, and a printer. All three of these are an up front investment.
- If you know you are going to stick with the Etsy business for a while, they are well worth it!
- You also need a few packaging supplies.
- I recommend keeping your packaging supplies as consistent as possible.
- For example, I sell pillow covers.
- If I use the same size envelope every time, I can save those dimensions in my Etsy shop.
- This makes creating shipping labels go fast.
- Also consider branding when buying your supplies.
I purchased some teal mailers for my shop.I felt the color fit my brand well.(LemonyStitch fabric washi) 3.Your package should look fun and cute and memorable.Yes, this may be necessary solely to keep up with industry standard, but also think about your customer receiving your package.Think of them opening their mail box and finding the cutest little package wrapped up so intentionally and carefully.
Along with my teal / turquoise mailers mentioned above, I took advantage of a few other Etsy owners and used their products to decorate the outside of my package.TaggedWithLove has adorable stickers.LemonyStitch has an amazing assortment of fabric washi.TheHappyHillsMarket has a good mix of paper products and fabric washi.JustAddSunshine has super fun and colorful stickers.
- PolkaDotBarn has bags and twine and fun tags to dress up your packages.
- AddysonLaneSigns has cheerful stickers.
- These would be a great way to reward repeat customers!
- TheWildBerryRoad has some great cards and printables.
All of these are great shop options for picking up something small for the outside of your packages.4.Including an extra little treat is not a must but highly recommended. What kind of extra treat? This could be an extra little something you make and include in each of your packages.
Or, this little extra could be something another great maker made.Think small.I’ve included decorative clothespins from Hobby Lobby.I’ve included a little pinwheel clip from Simple October (see picture above) (see picture above).I’ve also used large gold paper clips to add a simple intentional touch.
Every time I receive an order from Sew Organic Fabric, she sends along two or three additional fabric squares.5.Go the extra mile and consider having your business cards or thank you notes professionally printed.I originally printed my notes on my printer at home. Then I cut them at home with my fifteen year old scrapbook blade.
- It wasn’t until I received the ‘thank you’ note cards in the picture below from Pen And Paint that I realized I should invest the money in having my notes professionally printed and professionally cut to size.
- They looked so nice!
- Take a step towards exceptional customer service.
- This does not mean bending over backward for your customer.
- This means treating them as someone special.
Respond to their emails and questions in a timely manner.Be honest with them about your product.Give them adequate information so they are clear about the quality and handicraft they will be receiving.Tell them thank you.
For those of you toying with the idea of opening up your shop, I hope this starts you off on a better route than me when it comes to packaging my products.Make your shipping process fun.Let it be a reflection of you and make it memorable!

Behind The Scenes
Hello there, buddies! Those of you who don’t know already know that I own an Etsy shop where I offer lifestyle goods and accessories (you can see it here if you haven’t previously). In addition, I just realized that I have never posted anything from behind the scenes on my blog!XD I’m not sure why I haven’t done so before, but it’s definitely past time!I know some of you have inquired about how I wrap my purchases before they are shipped to you, so I figured I’d start there!
I hope you and your friends will find this entertaining to read! My company began as a scrunchie shop, but it has now grown to include face masks, keychains and lanyards, elastic hair ties, and, most recently, macramé earrings (which I am quite pleased about, by the way)!My scrunchies, hair ties, and earrings are all packaged in these cards that I have on hand, and they work great. What I really like about it is how simple it is, but also how effectively it holds the items and makes them stand out!In any case, here’s how all of the scrunchies are sent out: In most cases, I put them onto the card, place them in the resealable bag, and then seal the bag with these kraft paper ″thank you stickers.″ Those ″you have amazing taste″ stickers are also something I’d like to replace with pink and gold ″you have great taste″ stickers, which I believe would fit better with my brand. But I don’t want to do that until I’ve used up all of the kraft paper stickers I have on hand.
In a similar fashion to the scrunchies, I wrap the elastic hair ties in clear cellophane bags instead of the resealable bags and stickers. This gives the box a more professional appearance overall. They’re quite affordable and perform admirably!
The macramé earrings are wrapped in a manner similar to that of the scrunchies and hair ties as well. The only major change is that I punch two holes at the top of the card for the earrings, allowing them to dangle down from the card.I really like the way the bright earrings with gold hardware stand out against the black and white plain card. For the face masks, I just place them in the same resealable bags as the scrunchies, insert a card with ″face mask care instructions,″ and seal the bags with the kraft paper (and, perhaps, soon, pink and gold) stickers! All of the lanyards and key chains are tied together with some twine to make a nice little bow, and then (depending on the size) they are placed in either the resealable bags with the sticker or the transparent cellophane bags for storage.Unless otherwise specified, all of my real items are shipped in either a rose gold poly mailer, a geometric marble poly mailer, or a cactus poly mailer.
When I run out of the geometric marble and cactus designs, I’m going to reorder them in a blush pink hue to make them more cohesive with the rest of my branding! The outside of the package also has these lovely ″happy mail″ stickers, which I think are absolutely the cutest thing on the planet!I make it a point to include one of these adorable postcards with every transaction I get! They have a little information about my business, as well as methods to remain in touch, as well as a promo code for the next time they visit!
- I get them produced via Vistaprint, and they are both quite professional-looking and reasonably priced!
- A handwritten ″thank you″ and my signature are also included to give the gift a more personal touch, which I find appealing.
- I believe that my consumers much enjoy the customized touch — it gives the impression that you are purchasing from a genuine person rather than a large corporation!
- shopsmall A small freebie should be included whenever feasible as well as an added bonus!
- I’m hoping to begin offering a small freebie with each sale in the near future, but for the time being, any orders over $35 and all of my email and blog subscribers (hello, pals!) will receive a nice hair clip with their orders.
- Make sure to click on the icon to the right to receive your free gift!
- Do not forget to go at my list of resources and suggestions for small company owners, which you will find to be quite beneficial and which you will require in order to expand your small business!

How long does it take for Etsy to ship?
Two factors influence the amount of time it takes for products to move from vendors to their final destination: First and foremost, it all depends on how long it takes for Etsy merchants to finish their things and ship them.
Preparing things for transportation is a time-consuming process. This also includes the proper packing of boxes and the application of shipping labels to them. If your items are handcrafted, it is possible that sellers will take more time to fine-tune them. In the second place, it’s entirely up to you and your Etsy shipping preferences.
When it comes to shipping, one of the problems addressed by Etsy’s shipping standards is whether an item must be transported to a foreign country. To learn more about store shipping standards, visit Etsy’s shipping policies page and search for the phrase ″shipping time″ under ″shipping time.″ Processing time for an item will be set to 5 days if the seller does not indicate a processing time for the item.Depending on the destination, shipping to a different country could take anywhere from 10 days to 2 days or even less time. Then Etsy takes the estimated processing time and the maximum shipment time and adds them together to establish the overall Etsy delivery duration for the item.
What Is an Estimated Delivery Date in Etsy?
The expected delivery date indicates when you should expect your product to arrive. When it comes to most products, the processing time for what you purchased (the amount of time it takes the vendor to manufacture and prepare them for shipment) is utilized to establish the projected delivery date. The current date is also taken into consideration.Time required for processing plus carrier transit time plus one day equals the estimated delivery date.To give you an example, if the processing time for an item you bought is 3-5 days and the transit time for the shipping option you selected is typically 2-4 days, your expected arrival date is between 5 and 9 days from now.
It is crucial to remember that not all items will be shipped on the scheduled delivery dates provided. For each order, the seller has complete control over the shipping options, which defines when the order will be delivered and how quickly.
How much does it cost to ship on Etsy?
The cost of delivery on Etsy is decided by the distance between the customer and the seller, as well as the size and weight of the item being purchased, among other factors.By accessing the product page, you will be able to obtain tracking information. After that, pick your nation from the drop-down option labeled ″Shipping To″ in the section titled ″Shipping & Policies.″ In the event that you are purchasing from the United States, please give your ZIP code so that we can determine how much it will cost to ship your item.Additionally, Price Your Postage, which is a tool that predicts the cost of shipping, may be used to determine how much you will have to pay in shipping charges. To acquire shipping information, select whether you wish to ship items to a domestic or international destination while filling out the order form.
After that, enter your ZIP Code as well as the product’s specifications, such as its weight and size. After that, select Price Calculation from the drop-down menu.
What to Do When My Etsy order stuck in transit?
When packages are delayed, it may be quite frustrating. You can try to persuade the seller to make a ″where is my mail″ claim with the United States Postal Service through the vendor’s website. It may take two to three tries; tracking says that the item is ″Moving to the next facility for 3-5 days,″ at which point you should register a claim with the carrier. For them to find your delivery, it will take around 3 days.Customers should contact the seller’s customer service department if the seller cannot locate your item.
In the event that you’re still waiting for a parcel that has been listed as delivered but has not yet arrived, you should first consider phoning or making a missing mail request.Even with Priority Mail, it is not uncommon for a delay to occur during these periods of high demand. It’s automatically covered for Priority Mail up to $100 if you’ve connected your shipping label with Etsy. You can file an insurance claim for missing or misdirected mail on the United States Postal Service’s website after 15 days.
How long do Etsy packages stay in pre-transit?
It may stay in Pre-Transit for up to two days after the seller has handed over the box to the shipper and the package has been scanned into the tracking system. The shipping label is frequently printed many days before the goods is ready to be shipped out of the country.Occasionally, the shipper fails to scan the shipment and enter it into the system. One or two packages have been picked up by my postman, but they have been ignored during the first scanning procedure on one or two instances. The only way I was able to locate it was when one of the stations on my delivery route scanned it in.

Packing & shipping tips to save you money
In the case of a small business, shipping may be one of the most expensive aspects of running an online store, especially in the early stages. This is especially true in light of the fact that shipping demand is expected to increase considerably in 2020.The delivery of your items to clients in a timely, efficient, and safe manner is perhaps the most critical aspect of your business operation. If your items are delivered late, broken, damaged, or leaking, it is possible that this may be the last time you see that particular consumer.Fortunately, we’ve put together some cost-saving suggestions to assist you in properly packaging your shipments and shipping your items for less money.
Create an efficient shipping station
When mailing goods on a regular basis, whether through the United States Postal Service (USPS), United Parcel Service (UPS), Federal Express (FedEx), or another shipping service, having a designated location for preparing your items for pickup or delivery is highly vital.By reducing the number of mistakes with orders, minimizing damage to the products being packaged, and recovering time wasted searching for misplaced supplies such as packaging tape, scissors, and shipping labels, it will help you save money in the long run.If you have a bigger workstation, you might consider purchasing some open racks or shelves to store your shipping materials. For products such as mailing envelopes, shipping boxes, padded mailers, and bubble wrap as well as promotional items such as business cards, coupon books, and freebies that may be included in each shipment, it is preferable to have a handy location to keep them. Also, designate a space where you may store vital order documents on hand, as well as pencils, paperclips, and other essentials such as scissors.
An inexpensive tiny pegboard, if you have any available wall space, is ideal for storing and organizing tools and supplies such as scissors and packing tape.Make use of a tiny shower curtain pole or paper towel holder to keep bubble wrap, butcher paper, and other wrapped packing materials tidy and orderly when moving. In the event that you are shipping from a tiny office or your home, consider robust boxes or plastic bins that can be stacked and stored when not in use.Come in to your local UPS or FedEx shop to get some ideas about how the pros set up their shipping stations and get some inspiration. You can take a handful of photos (with permission, of course) to serve as a reference when you’re putting out your own station.
Start with the right shipping box
When feasible, attempt to match the size of your box to the size and weight of your product or items in order to save the maximum money while keeping your product or products in good condition. In order to avoid additional expenses from your shipping provider, it is important to make your box as compact as possible while still packing everything within.Additionally, your consumers will enjoy not receiving a box that is ten times the size of the item within. When shipping heavy items, make sure you select a double-walled shipping container.
Recycle & reuse
In the event that fresh merchandise or even personal items arrive, try to repurpose any boxes that are still in excellent shape to ship products to your clients. However, be certain that the boxes are strong and free of flaws such as stains, splits, and holes. If you have any pen marks or scratches, try using opaque-backed shipping labels, such as Avery Trueblock® labels, to conceal them.TrueBlock shipping labels are available by the sheet online or by the pack in-store or online.TrueBlock shipping labels are designed to block out anything behind the label.
In the event that your stock of reusable boxes runs out, several shipping companies will give you with complimentary boxes if you utilize their service. As a result, depending on the size and weight of your product, you may be able to get your shipment boxes for free. When shipping things that are tiny and unbreakable, some companies may also supply complimentary envelopes for you to use.
Shipping heavy items
Sending large things in more than one box is a smart idea when possible, especially if you’re shipping them internationally.Customer’s may find it difficult to lift heavy boxes. You want to be certain that whomever will be receiving the package will be able to lift and carry it as required. For example, if someone purchases a case of wine, they are certainly aware that all 12 bottles would be sent in a single package. You would never, ever put two cases of wine in the same package, would you?
Furthermore, the cost of two smaller, lighter boxes might be cheaper than the cost of one large, heavy box.Check with your shipping provider to determine if there is a variation in the cost of shipment.
What the shipping companies offer
- When you send items through the United States Postal Service using their flat-rate priority service, you will receive free shipping boxes and mailing envelopes.
- No of how much your shipment weighs or where it is being shipped, you will always pay a predetermined amount.
- Furthermore, delivery is normally completed in one to three days, depending on the target country.
- Obviously, mailing delays are common with the COVID limitations that are now in effect.
- Once your shipments are ready to be picked up, you may even arrange for a pickup at your place of work or residence.
- Take a look at the price and see what the difference in cost would be if you were to purchase boxes and send them yourself rather than using flat-rate shipping boxes.
UPS also provides a choice of mailing boxes, tubes, and envelopes that are completely free of charge. Some are charged based on a fixed rate and the zone, but others are charged depending on weight and the zone in which they are delivered.
However, FedEx does not offer gratis express or ground shipping materials on its website; instead, you must phone the firm to place an order for these i
