The best way to wrap a package for shipping
Following are some general packing recommendations for most shipments; however, our postal guide has advice on how to package specialist products that require further protection against loss or damage.
- Select a corrugated cardboard box that is robust and of high quality. Remember to remove any previous mailing labels or cover any previous addresses if you’re reusing a box.
- Tissue paper or newspaper should be used to wrap the object (if fragile). When mailing products that come in a frame, such as photographs, make sure to wrap the front and back with sturdy cardboard that is bigger than the frame. Soft material should be inserted between the frame and the cardboard to alleviate strain on the glass.
- Packaging should be done in a container or box that is small enough to fit within your shipment box.
- The inner container should be labeled with the shipment box’s address and return address before being placed inside the box.
- Cushion the interior container with cushioning material (such as an old t-shirt or bubble wrap) on the top, bottom, and all sides to prevent the object from moving about and to better protect it.
- Strong tape should be used to seal the shipment box.
- Wrap the shipment box in kraft paper to protect it from damage.
- All seams should be taped using reinforced tape.
- Fill in the blanks with the address and return address on the top of the box, which is the longest side.
The General Terms and Conditions apply; for further information, go to canadapost.ca/generalterms.Assuming you are using a shipping label, be certain that it is clearly visible and that it is applied flat and wrinkle-free to the box’s biggest side. This means that the label cannot be put over a seam or a box closing, nor can it wrap around the corners of the box.
- Strapping or tape should not be used to conceal the label.
- When you’re finished, you may drop your package off at any post office.
- If you utilized pre-paid shipping supplies, you may drop it in any regular letter box on the street.
Should I Wrap My Shipping Box in Paper?
Wrapping a box in any form of paper is a surefire way to invite disaster.Brown paper packets tied together with thread are not among the most popular items among those who work in the shipping industry, to put it mildly. It is common for the conveyor belts that transport the parcels to catch on the paper or become entangled in the twine.
- Packages that contain thread, ribbons, or twine run the danger of being entangled in the conveyor belt system, causing damage to the box and maybe even the conveyor belt system itself.
- Whenever you wrap boxes in paper, whether it’s brown or another color, the wrapping is more likely to shred.
- Furthermore, when the paper breaks, the conveyor belt does not function effectively, and the shipping label is frequently ruined as a result of this.
- Is it possible to envisage a stack of torn packages being removed off the production line with neither a return address nor a shipping address?
This is not good. When shipping gifts, an unadorned box sealed with tape is the most effective method.Make careful you use a high-quality packing tape for this project.
- This is not Scotch tape.
- This is not duct tape.
- (Just to be clear, duct tape is NOT the same as packing tape.) In cold weather, it will crack and peel off of boxes, whereas in hot weather, it will become soft and melt off of boxes.
- Packing tape should always be used!)

How to Wrap a Package – Packaging Advice
Parcel Monkey will assist you in finding a reputable courier to transport your item, but it is your responsibility to ensure that the box is properly prepared before it is dispatched.Because your package will be traveling alongside thousands of others via warehouses and, in some cases, airports, it is critical that it be packaged securely to guarantee that it arrives safely. Are you unsure of how to properly package a box for shipping?
- Never fear, we’ve compiled some suggestions and guidance to assist you in your endeavors.
How to wrap a package for shipping
- All things should be packaged in appropriate boxes and tightly sealed with strong parcel tape.
- For shipping purposes, heavy-duty or corrugated cardboard boxes should be used, preferably brand new*. Double-package the item, putting one box within the other, to provide additional protection.
- To avoid damage to boxes and parcels, wrap them with strong tape around the edges.
- Triangular boxes are particularly well suited for tube-shaped items. A sturdy foundation may be constructed from any of the four sides, while the other two sides serve as ideal surfaces for locating the barcoded address label.
- It is recommended that any products that are in ‘display packaging’ be sent in an outside box.
The removal of any old stickers or labels from prior shipments is essential if you are recycling a used cardboard box. This is especially important if you are recycling a box that contained hazardous chemicals. It is possible that packages labeled with hazardous labels will be returned or destroyed, regardless of what is in them.
- Ensure that you separately wrap each item in your box, as this will provide greater protection during transit and limit the likelihood of the contents causing harm to other things in the box
- When packing the box internally, consider adding polystyrene, bubble wrap, or even newspaper to keep the contents from moving around.
- In order to avoid direct contact with the exterior box, the contents should be ‘completely enclosed’ by padding.
Please be advised that poor packaging may result in Parcel Monkey or the courier partner being held accountable for any loss or damage, so please take your time and make certain that your things are well covered before sending them. An in-depth Parcel Monkey packing guide may be found by visiting this page.
After you’ve placed your order, we’ll send you an email with the pre-paid shipping label attached.Nothing more than printing it off and firmly attaching it to the outside of your shipment will be required. It is also possible to print shipping labels from your Parcel Monkey account if you do not have access to your email at the time.
- More information on printing and attaching shipping labels may be found here.
To ensure that overseas shipments are properly documented, three copies of the customs documentation should be attached to exterior of the box together with the shipping label.Ideally, these should be placed in a plastic wallet or envelope, but if you don’t have one, an ordinary envelope labeled ‘Customs’ can suffice in this situation as well.Read our customs guidance page for more information on customs, including how long it takes for a shipment to pass customs and what to do if your box is held in customs.
Weighing your package
It is now necessary to weigh your package once it has been prepared.Don’t be tempted to weigh your item before it is packed since the packing must be taken into consideration when calculating the ultimate weight and size. When it comes to calculating the cost of delivery, couriers utilize the dimensional weight of your package.
- When you enter the exact dimensions and weight of your package into our shipping calculator, this calculation is carried out automatically on your behalf.
Things to avoid when shipping a package
- Inadequate packaging – Poor quality packaging does not give the same amount of protection as high-grade packaging.
- Boxes and barcodes that have been carved.
- Surface creases are common on the surfaces of broken or weak boxes. Because of this, there is a greater chance that the barcode on the address label will be crumpled as well, which may hinder tracking through our network.
- Things that have not been packed – All items must be properly wrapped for transportation.
- Containers that are open or not properly packed – Make certain that your shipment is properly sealed so that nothing falls out during delivery.
- Luggage – We do not recommend that suitcases be used as shipping containers.
- Handles and wheels can be destroyed, overfilled boxes can split, and shipping labels or customs papers can commonly become removed, resulting in the loss of commodities in the process of shipment. If you do bring a suitcase, make sure all of the handles are taped down, that there are no wheels on the bag, and that any labels, as well as any customs paperwork, are firmly fixed. Lastly, place a shipping label inside the container
When you mail a package, there are a range of products that should not be sent over a courier network for safety reasons. In order to ensure that you are aware of these things, we have compiled a list of forbidden and restricted items, which has been compiled based on the recommendations of our courier partners. When shipping internationally, make sure to check with the destination country to see if there are any limitations in place.

How To Wrap Art for Shipping
- How to Package Your Artwork for Shipping I recently finished framing a few orders and presents of my paintings that needed to be shipped out the door. Several of my recommendations and how-to information on how to wrap your own art presents (framed art and original painting on canvas) for shipping were useful, so I thought I would share them with you. First and foremost, though, is this: Prepare your artwork by framing it. (If you want assistance with this, please let me know in the comments section below and I will produce a blog post specifically for you!) Collect the following items for the following steps: Boxes made of cardboard, any clean, fragrance-free recycled box would suffice (as in, don’t use a nasty pizza box.unless your intended recipient also collects pizza boxes, in which case I must meet that person)
- Brown Kraft wrapping paper, such as this one or this one, is an excellent choice.
- Tape used by artists (used for matting pics, and keeping things from sticking permanently). Aaron Brother’s is where I purchase my. You may find it by clicking HERE.
- Packaging tape of the ordinary variety
- The only thing that will cut it is a large pair of sharp scissors (those kid-sized scissors from the Dollar Store are simply not going to cut it). They will not, under any circumstances, suffice for our cutting chores
- no pun intended.
- Unorganized pieces of bubble wrap that are approximately 2x the size of your frame
- Use a straight edge or ruler, a pencil or a pen.
- Make sure to include GLASSINE PAPER on a roll on your shopping list if you intend to create original paintings.
- Prepare your work table by laying up your tools and framed art on it before you begin. I prefer to work in my studio, on a huge dinner table that can be folded away. Additionally, the kitchen table is a fantastic alternative. If you have a limited amount of room, the floor is an excellent option. What to do after you’re done. AKA: How I prefer to ship framed art/original art on canvas in a protective envelope. In the case of framed art: Cut two pieces of brown kraft paper that are approximately twice the size of the frame. One sheet will be wrapped over the front and back of the frame, and a second sheet will be wrapped around the sides and bottom of the frame. To put it simply, it’s basically a loose packaging wrap that goes around your frame to protect all of the frame’s surfaces from dents and dust.
- Use the Artist’s Tape to glue the brown kraft paper to the frame, or to the paper itself, depending on how much excess you have cut off.
- See the photo example below (which is made of glassine paper, but the concept is the same)
- The brown kraft wrapping paper should not be used while creating ORIGINAL ART on canvas. Make two pieces of glassine paper that are approximately twice the size of the frame. One sheet will be wrapped over the front and back of the frame, and a second sheet will be wrapped around the sides and bottom of the frame. To put it simply, it’s basically a loose packaging wrap that goes around your frame to protect all of the frame’s surfaces from dents and dust.
- To create ORIGINAL ART, glue the glassine paper to itself with the Artist’s Tape (available at craft stores). In order for NONE of the Artist’s Tape to come into contact with the canvas, make sure you have enough glassine paper.
- The first step is to wrap the canvas with glassine paper or other similar material. Wrap framed paintings in brown kraft paper to make it look more rustic (the brown kraft paper is thicker and works best for framed pieces) Continue For framed or original canvas paintings, see the links below: Make a mark on the clean cardboard with your ruler where the front of the frame/canvas will be. Repeat this process twice more.
- Cut a piece of cardboard that is slightly bigger (maybe a quarter inch all the way around larger) than your frame size, making sure that the two cardboard cuts (one for the front of the frame/canvas, and one for the rear of the frame/canvas) are about the same size. You will sandwich the artwork between two pieces of cardboard (see illustration).
- Placing one cardboard cutout flat on your table and slightly off the edge (by about an inch) can help it stand out.
- It will make it much easier to tape everything together. However, be sure that the frame is not dangling perilously off the table). The one cardboard cutout should be placed flat on your work surface if you are working on the floor.
- Place your framed painting or canvas on top of the cardboard cutout you made earlier.
- Assemble your frame/cardboard sandwich by laying your second piece of cardboard cutout on top of the first piece.
- You’re almost finished, and you’re more than halfway there. After all, it’s almost snack time!
- Make a strip of packing tape (or artist tape, if you prefer) and run it from the top of your cardboard sandwich down the front of it to the edge of the table, where you can gently flip your cardboard sandwich around and have your tape run to the other piece of cardboard
- Increase the amount of tape used to produce a tight packaging so that nothing wiggles within the sandwich
- Sandwiched between two pieces of cardboard is a piece of art. Now, take your bubble wrap and wrap it over the cardboard sandwich, securing it all with packing tape to keep everything together. (Alternatively, a bubble wrap envelope that fits the full sandwiched artwork will suffice)
- Bingo! You have completed your task.
- To mail your framed art gift, just purchase a Priority Mail box from the United States Postal Service and a roll of brown Kraft paper to fill in any gaps in the box.

|Scented items||You must seal the item to prevent the scent from escaping (including samples).||Perfumes and toiletries with an alcohol base are considered dangerous goods (flammable liquids). So, they’re not allowed in the mail stream. See Non-mailable Matter for more information.||We don’t suggest any special markings.|
How eBay Sellers Can Avoid Cutting Corners When Shipping
Selling on eBay is not without its difficulties. The shipping aspect of beginning an eBay business is perhaps the most frightening aspect of the process. What should you charge for shipping and handling?
- What type of carrier should you choose?
- What class of mail should be used for different sorts of packages weighing varying amounts of weight?
- It may all be a bit perplexing at times.
- However, there are several fundamentals that all eBay sellers should be aware of when it comes to shipping in order to avoid missing items, returned products, and, most importantly, dissatisfied consumers.
Don’t Wrap Boxes in Brown Paper
This is an out-of-date procedure that is no longer required. There is no longer a need for ″brown paper parcels linked together with twine.″ Back in the day, people used to wrap boxes in brown paper grocery bags or brown Kraft paper to protect them from the elements. If your package is completely coated in paper, both the USPS and UPS may refuse to accept it.
- The shipping sector has become increasingly mechanized.
- Paper can be ripped from packages by conveyor belts, sorting machines, and other industrial gear.
- When this occurs, the box is tossed to the side and, of course, does not have any information on it because the shipping address and return address were written on a piece of paper that is no longer attached to the box.
- It is as a result of this that the item will not be delivered to the buyer or returned to you as the vendor.
You can get tracking information from eBay, and you may submit a claim on your goods for up to $100 under the eBay shipping protocol, but who wants to go through all that trouble?Your buyer is just concerned with getting his merchandise. He isn’t interested in hearing about how it was misplaced or destroyed.
- On an average day, the post office loses a significant number of things.
- By affixing the mailing label directly to the box, you may avoid missing goods, disgruntled customers, and the bother of returning things that were not received.
- Boxes should not be covered with any type of paper.
Don’t Use Alcohol, Beer, or Liquor Boxes
The booze shop provides excellent boxes: they are durable, small, and completely free!Unfortunately, the United States Postal Service (USPS) and United Parcel Service (UPS) do not allow the re-use of liquor, wine, or beer cartons for shipment.Section 227 of Publication 52 of the United States Postal Service’s Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail states that ″Cleaning supply boxes, liquor/wine/beer boxes, and other similar containers are examples of widely repurposed containers.
- Some cleaning products are classified as hazardous goods, and while most alcoholic drinks are not classified as hazardous materials, they are not permitted to be mailed.
- Packages containing alcoholic drinks or labeled with alcoholic beverage marks are not permitted to be sent through the postal service.″
Don’t Overstuff Flat Rate Envelopes
Flat rate envelopes are an excellent method to mail tiny, compact, and non-fragile things to clients at a low cost and with less effort.Unfortunately, some low-cost eBay merchants take advantage of this opportunity to the utmost and misuse the site.YouTube is littered with videos of eBay sellers who take great satisfaction in how much they can fit into a flat rate mailer, whether it’s a cardboard box or a padded envelope.
- For example, you’ll see merchants cramming enormous men’s pants or jackets into these envelopes by rolling and stuffing them.
- It’s not a good idea.
- When flat rate mailers are overstuffed, they have the potential to burst open.
- When this occurs, either your client will get a damaged delivery and submit a claim, or the item will not even make it to the customer’s possession.
Is it really worth it to save a few bucks here and there? The tagline of the United States Postal Service, ″If it fits, it ships,″ should not be taken literally.Flat rate mailers must be able to shut on their own without the use of additional tape.
- Consider the goods or services that your consumer will receive.
- Was it worth the negative comments for sloppily packaged products?
Don’t Alter Flat Rate Boxes
Flat rate boxes were created to make shipping simple and cost-effective by charging a single, fixed amount for a certain size box.Using the flat rate box is not an option if the item does not fit within the container.Flat rate boxes are not permitted to be chopped down, taped together, telescoped, Frankensteined, or otherwise modified in any manner.
- If the flat rate box does not function well for your needs, it will not be used.
- It’s as easy as that.
- Keep a number of various boxes on hand so that when it comes time to send an item, you will have a selection to pick from and will be able to select the most appropriate box for the item.
- Priority Mail supplies from the United States Postal Service can be obtained for free on USPS.com and delivered to your home at no cost.
Stocking up on a range of sizes and keeping them on hand at all times is not a bad idea.
Don’t Abuse Media Mail
- Media mail is intended for use by the media. Items that can be transported by Media Mail include: books with at least 8 pages
- sound and video recordings, CDs, and DVDs
- and other items that are small in size.
- Scripts should be performed.
- Music that has been printed
- Digitally readable media
- 16mm or narrower films
- printed test materials and accessories
- Computer-readable media
- Educational charts that are printed
- Loose leaf sheets and binders containing medical information intended for distribution to doctors, medical colleges, and medical students
Magazines are not the same as direct mail.Craft kits are not the same thing as media mail.If it isn’t on this list, it isn’t going to be sent by Media Mail.
- For complete information on what may be mailed Media Mail, please see USPS.com.
- If you follow these shipping guidelines, your cargo will arrive at its destination in good condition.
- After all, when it comes to DSRs and comments, the customer is always right.
- Please do not provide any justification for their low evaluation of your work.
Preparing your package with care can assist to guarantee that it arrives safely.
Select a box that has adequate space for the cushioning material to be wrapped around the contents. For weights up to ten pounds, sturdy paperboard or corrugated fiberboard boxes are the ideal choice. You should completely erase or obliterate all prior labels and marks from the box if you plan to reuse it. A thick black marker works best for this.

Mailing Fragile Items
Protect your things by wrapping them in foamed plastic or padding, and stuffing the padding inside hollow items as well as solid ones. Packages containing food or other perishable commodities should be labeled ″Fragile″ or ″Perishable″ to prevent them from spoiling. The most effective technique to protect your costly belongings from harm is to package them with care.
Mailing Heavy Items
For items that are extremely heavy or thick, start with a solid box, pack the contents firmly with strong material for bracing to avoid shifting, and tape all of the edges with reinforced tape to ensure that the item does not shift during shipping. Packages weighing more than 70 pounds are unable to be sent.
2-inch-wide tape should be used to seal the box’s entrance and strengthen all of its seams.Clear or brown packaging tape, reinforced packing tape, or paper tape are all acceptable options.Use of rope, string, twine, masking tape, or cellophane tape is strictly prohibited.
- Place a strip of transparent packing tape over the address label to prevent the address from becoming smeared or distorted.
Print or type your address on the upper left corner of the package, on the same side as the delivery address, in the same font as the delivery address.
Extra services should be labeled above the delivery address and to the right of the return address, or to the left of the delivery address, whichever is appropriate.
Stamps, a postage meter, or a PC Postage system can all be used to apply the exact amount of postage. On this website, you may calculate and purchase postage online.
The delivery address should be printed or typed parallel to the longest side of the item. Type or print your address clearly with a pen or permanent marker so that it can be read from a distance of at least an arm’s length away. There should be no commas or periods.
USPS tracking labels and Signature Confirmation labels are positioned to the left of the address label.
City, State, and ZIP Code
Calling 1800ASKUSPS will help visitors determine the right spelling of a city name and state abbreviation, as well as the location of a ZIP Code. It is more efficient and accurate to direct your mail if you use the right ZIP Code.

7 Tips for Packing and Shipping Heavy Items
- Packing and shipping large, bulky things has its own set of difficulties. Packages for international shipments must be stronger and more protected than those for domestic ones. Why? Weighier goods are more likely to be carried by forklift rather than by human force, and to be transferred between trucks on their journey to their final destinations, which increases the risk of damage. Because you are the shipper, it is your responsibility to adequately pack these larger products in order to prevent them from being damaged or destroyed during handling by heavy warehouse equipment or changeover between large tractor-trailer vehicles. Many transport companies may refuse to take products that they believe will not withstand the crush of a hydraulic lift or the arms of a forklift
- in fact, some carriers will not accept any items at all. When transporting large things, shippers should make certain that the items can survive the following: being dropped
- being subjected to vibration from conveyor belts and vehicles
- and being subjected to extreme temperatures.
- Compression is being felt on all sides as a result of uncontrolled stacking
- Experiencing temperature and humidity fluctuations
What steps can you take to prevent these issues?By improving the quality of the packaging. Here are some pointers to assist you in accomplishing your goal: 1) Make sure you ship on an appropriate pallet.
- Some objects, particularly those that are heavy, are best served by being secured to a pallet.
- Wooden or plastic pallets should be used since they are more durable and can endure the stress of being transported and raised.
- According to a Shopify blog post titled ″7 Quick Fixes for Your Biggest Shipping and Fulfillment Problems,″ such goods should never exceed the weight constraints of their pallet.
- 2) Select packaging that is both sturdy and long-lasting.
The cartons should be made of corrugated cardboard that is robust enough to support the weight of a full load of products piled on top of them.Only new corrugated boxes that have been firmly sealed with strengthened water-activated tape should be used for this purpose.Another option is to place a layer of X-Pad inside each box, ensuring that the bottom, sides, and top of the shipment are all covered.
- This will provide an additional layer of product protection.
- Your goods will benefit from the exceptional bracing and cushioning provided by X-pad.
- Extra layers of strengthened water-activated tape should be applied to the bottom of the box to provide further protection.
- 3) Wrap the objects with bubble wrap and cushion them.
- Heavy objects should be placed in the center of the box to prevent the box from tilting as it is being transported.
- Increase the product’s protection by surrounding them with a thick layer of X-Pad.
- Fill in any blanks that may exist within the box.
- Never ship using crumpled newspaper or packing paper since the paper will compress throughout the shipping process.
Make certain that nothing moves within the cargo.Items that are heavier are more prone to shift about within a box.4) Add another box to the list.Insert the packed box into a larger box than the first and fill in the empty area with an X-pad or air cushions to protect the contents. If possible, you should leave at least two inches of space between the inner and outer boxes, depending on the item being shipped.Items that are really fragile, such as heavy vases, will need more clearance.
You must have enough padding to safeguard the item in the event that the box is dropped or punctured during shipping.5) Apply water-activated tape to the outside of the box.Choose fiberglass reinforced water-activated tape for increased safety while working with heavy objects.
Water-activated tape actually adheres to a corrugated shipment box, preventing it from being opened during transportation and storage.Using tape that is not intended for packaging will most likely not prevent the box from being opened during transportation and may even allow for pilfering during the trip itself.6) Try not to make the boxes overly hefty.Consider dividing very hefty shipments into numerous boxes and individually wrapping individual components.Overly heavy boxes are more likely to break during transport, and they also provide a larger danger of the carton being dropped by people who are lifting it.7) Give it a good whack.
After the cargo has been sealed, give it a good shake.Take care to ensure that nothing can move about inside the box.Anything that has the ability to move can cause other delicate things in the box to be smashed, as well as potentially crushing packing material. If you hear anything rattling about or shifting inside the package, you should open it and repack it immediately. The majority of carriers will refuse to accept any package if the contents sound like they are rattling about inside it.
- What’s most important is this: Heavy objects, in particular, are more susceptible to damage as they transit through the supply chain.
- Using proper packaging ensures that they will be more resilient when subjected to the rigors of forklift operations as well as conveyor belt transfers, repeated truck transfers, and the obstacles of over-the-road transportation This results in fewer damaged items and returns, and, as a result, clients who are more inclined to make another purchase from you.

Ideas to Decorate a Package to Mail
Stickers are a fun way to add a personal touch to your packaging. When it comes to sending parcels, the United States Postal Service (USPS) has precise standards. However, while it is enjoyable to express yourself creatively via the design of the package, there are several considerations to bear in mind when decorating a package for mailing.
- According to the United States Postal Service website, there should be nothing that might catch on post office machinery, such as ribbons.
- It is also important that the delivery and return addresses be not obscured from view.
Using ornamental paper to wrap your gift before shipping it may be the simplest and most straightforward method of adorning it before delivery. It doesn’t matter what kind of gift wrap you choose; just make sure it’s durable and thick so that it can withstand the travel without ripping. After you have wrapped the item, write the recipient’s address on a piece of plain white paper and attach it to the top of the package.
- The address will stand out more clearly against the brightly colored paper in this manner.
Use the paper to personalize the parcel by writing a personal (but not too personal, as mail carriers will see it) note on the front and back.Make use of a variety of different colored markers to create a more vibrant look.Choose one for each member of the family to add a layer of interest to the table.
- Alternatively, beloved quotations, music lyrics, or a poem might be used to embellish the packaging.
- Ensure, however, that the words do not flow into the address.
- Keep them out of the delivery and return address sections as much as possible.
Stamps, Stencils and Stickers
Stamps, stencils, and stickers are all inexpensive and simple methods to personalize a gift for mailing.Children under the age of five who like stamping paper or playing with stickers are suitable candidates for this activity. It is possible that small children will have more difficulty with stencils.
- Make use of all three or select a single issue to concentrate on.
- For example, you might use silver and gold star stickers to embellish an entire box.
- Alternatively, adorn the packaging with a stamp in the shape of a dog bone and then embellish with dog stickers.
