Leon County zip code named poorest in Florida

  1. LEON COUNTY, Fla.
  2. (WTXL) – The Leon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a possible homicide.
  3. According to a recent survey by the Florida Chamber of Commerce, Leon County is rated 14th in the state for the number of children living in impoverished households.
  4. Leon County is home to the poorest zip code in the state, which is why county officials are collaborating with residents in the 32304 region to improve their living conditions.
  5. The county commission has scheduled a community meeting for March 9 to discuss the challenges that are currently affecting the area.

Located between Florida State University’s campus and the Ochlocknee River, the zip code is 34701.According to the Florida Chamber of Commerce, over half of the children residing in this area are living below the federal poverty line.Commissioner Rick Minor says they are interested in hearing from people of the community about the difficulties they are facing.″I believe that when it comes to confronting poverty, we must talk to the neighbors and the communities more than anybody else about what they can do to get themselves back on their feet,″ Minor explained.″Any time we can bring together community leaders and neighbors to talk about issues around poverty, it’s a good thing.″ According to Commissioner Minor, one factor that might be skewing these figures for this area is the fact that college students who live in the area are included in the count but may not truly be below the federal poverty threshold.
