    Allegheny Arsenal

    The Allegheny Arsenal, which was originally constructed by Benjamin Latrobe, was a mainstay in the economic and social life of Pittsburgh during the nineteenth century.A total of 38 mountainous acres were devoted to the arsenal, which was located in Lawrenceville.The arsenal, which was built in 1814 at a strategic site, supplied and connected with the western hemisphere.

    1. The Allegheny Arsenal also established a strong bond with the Lawrenceville neighborhood.
    2. Young boys and girls as young as 10 years old labored at the plantation during the American Civil War, loading cartridges, sewing harnesses, and handling live ammunition.
    3. Because of inadequate or non-enforced safety rules, employees and managers were negligent when handling live explosives, and gunpowder was frequently spilt or swept into the ground and onto the roadways leading away from the Arsenal.
    4. On September 17, 1862 — the same day as the Battle of Antietam – a pair of explosions occurred as a result of these behaviors and other contributing causes.
    • The calamity at the Allegheny Arsenal upset the Lawrenceville neighborhood in the same way that the war shook western Maryland.
    • The explosion claimed the lives of more than 70 individuals.
    • The purpose of this show is to resurrect a tale that has been mostly forgotten and to analyze the reasons for it.
