Bamboozled: Why a mystery package delivery could mean ID theft

    1. -43f1fa86a8431078.JPG Howard Fredrics of Park Ridge, New Jersey, is outside the Best Buy shop in Paramus, New Jersey, where he was a victim of identity theft.
    2. 09/17/2015 (Photo courtesy of Steve Hockstein |
    3. NJ Advance Media) It’s possible that what occurred to Howard Fredrics will happen to you.
    4. A case we’ve been tracking since the summer, and now that the holidays are here – with tons of online shopping and brown boxes appearing on doorsteps – we expect more scams like this to spring up all over the place.
    5. The frightening issue is that, even if you don’t purchase online, there isn’t much you can do to prevent this from happening to you.
    1. Even when law enforcement makes an attempt, it is nearly hard to apprehend the perpetrator of the hoax.
    2. So, here’s what transpired.
    3. Fredrics acquired a $50 Cuisinart coffee machine from a vendor on eBay who had a flawless feedback rating, for a total cost of $50.
    4. Fredrics made the transaction on August 12 using PayPal.
    5. On August 15, the package was delivered to Fredrics’ Park Ridge residence.
    1. Everything appeared to be in order.
    2. Two further deliveries were made to the residence in the early evening of August 19.
    3. The parcels came from Best Buy, and Fredrics’ wife, who received them, assumed they were products that her husband had bought from the company.
    4. Fredrics, on the other hand, was not anticipating any packages.

″When I opened the larger of the two packages, I was surprised to discover that it contained the exact same model of Cuisinart coffee maker that I had recently purchased on eBay and had received only a few days before,″ Fredrics explained.″I was a little taken aback by the fact that it contained the exact same model of Cuisinart coffee maker that I had recently purchased on eBay and received only a few days before.″ When he woke up the next morning, his initial thought was that he had unintentionally put an eBay auction bid on a second coffee machine offered by Best Buy.He immediately reviewed his recent eBay, PayPal, and bank account activity. His investigation turned up no evidence of any other transactions that may have conceivably related to the purchase of an extra coffee machine, according to the results of his extensive investigation. He then proceeded to unwrap the smaller gift.In this case, it was a lightning cable for use with Apple goods.

    1. However, because Fredrics did not utilize Apple goods, he was perplexed as to how the items had arrived at his door.
    2. He surmised that it was due to a processing error on the part of Best Buy, and he went on to do a bit more investigating.
    3. It seemed from the two packing slips that both transactions were made on Aug.
    • 13, the same day that he purchased something on eBay.
    • Fredrics’ name and address were included in the letter, but they used a telephone number that was not his.
    • He looked up the phone number on the internet and discovered that it belonged to someone in Rockaway.
    • A light bulb went off in my head.
    • Although it was plausible that an apparently random order for a lightning cable from Best Buy had been shipped by mistake, the fact that a second shipment included the same coffee machine he had acquired on eBay looked much too serendipitous to be the result of a simple order processing error.
    • In Fredrics’ opinion, ″it hinted that something more planned and potentially malicious was taking place, either involving the eBay seller or some other unconnected individual who discovered that I had acquired that specific coffee machine.″ There was something weird going on.

DIVING DEEPER INTO THE OCEAN As a further step, Fredrics went to the Best Buy website and logged in as a guest using the order numbers and telephone numbers obtained on the packing slips. His eyes were drawn to two orders, both of which were placed using a Gmail email account that had a variant of his name but did not match his genuine email address. In addition, the order had the last four numbers of a Visa card that did not belong to Fredrics, which raised suspicions.Other orders were shown on his account, including a two-year Geek Squad warranty and an extra cable, both of which were ready for pickup at the Best Buy in Paramus, New Jersey. The total cost of the items was $104.82.Fredrics was under the impression that his identity had been stolen.

    1. He first filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and then he phoned the Park Ridge Police Department to report the incident.
    2. Fredrics stated that the officer with whom he spoke was really helpful, and that he recommended that Fredrics contact Best Buy and eBay.
    3. The perpetrators, according to Fredrics, ″were most likely planning to conduct a test to see if I would quickly retrieve items shipped to my address and left on my doorstep in order to locate an address where they could have larger and more expensive fraudulently-obtained merchandise shipped, which could then be retrieved from my doorstep by someone connected to the perpetrators, when they believed I wasn’t home.″ Fredrics made a phone call to Best Buy later that day.
    4. The representative confirmed that the credit card used to make the purchases was in fact in Fredrics’ name, and that Best Buy had access to the credit card number, the Internet protocol address used to make the payments, and other information that may assist authorities in locating the fraudster.
    5. The representative stated that she was unable to provide the information to Fredrics directly, but that Best Buy would provide the information to police upon request.

In order for the police to make the request, she provided Fredrics precise instructions to pass along to them. Finally, the representative cancelled the store pickup item and instructed Fredrics to return the remaining things using a pre-paid label that the representative will mail to him.Fredrics reported the incident to the police after calling Equifax to obtain a 90-day fraud alert on his credit record.

The information given by Best Buy assisted Fredrics in notifying the authorities.A few weeks later, Fredrics received a call from a detective informing him that the Bergen County prosecutor’s office had issued a subpoena to Best Buy.Best Buy reacted by stating that it did not have any relevant information about the matter.

This didn’t make any sense, according to Fredrics, because the representative was quite clear about the information Best Buy possessed and what the police had to do in order to obtain it.According to the attorney general, ″By refusing to cooperate with police investigations and instead denying that they even had any relevant information in their response to the subpoena, Best Buy is enabling the perpetrators of identity theft against its customers to continue their activities without being apprehended by law enforcement.″ Police were forced to shut the case, and it was at this point that Fredrics reached out to Bamboozled.THE NITTY GRITTY OF IT ALL We forwarded the information to Best Buy, which included the case numbers and order numbers. We contacted the Park Ridge police department while the issue was being investigated.Despite the fact that they were unable to examine Fredrics’ case in detail, Capt.

Joseph Rampolla stated that identity theft instances occur on a daily basis, especially in tiny towns like Park Ridge. Then we received a call from Best Buy, and what they shared with us was a pleasant surprise. Is it possible that Best Buy was suppressing information?Nope. Was it possible that the information had gone from its servers?Nope.

The explanation for the company’s failure to comply with the subpoena was considerably more straightforward. It was only after comparing the notes and order numbers given by Bamboozled that Best Buy determined the order numbers on the subpoena were incorrect by one digit. That’s why Best Buy said that company didn’t have any documents to give.As a result, Best Buy requested that the prosecution re-file the subpoena.Yes, it did.

Additionally, Best Buy provided some critical information, but it was not enough to apprehend the criminals.According to Park Ridge Det.Michael Babcock, the Internet Protocol (IP) address used for the fraudulent purchases originated in New Jersey. He stated that he had dispatched a detective from that jurisdiction to speak with the owner of the address in question.

    • They discovered that the Wi-Fi in the residence was not password secured.
    • As Babcock points out, he has seen this happen previously, when criminals use open Internet Protocol addresses to conduct fraud.
    • ″That’s why it’s difficult to lay the blame on these individuals,″ he explained, noting that the Gmail account used to make the transaction was a bogus one.
    • This year, Babcock has received as many as 100 identity theft fraud reports, according to him.
    • According to the 2010 Census, the town has a population of 8,645 people and 3,283 homes, which is a significant figure.
    • Babcock stated that what occurred to Fredrics is a very regular occurrence.

After receiving an email notification that a shipment is on its way, the burglar will simply go pick it up at the delivery location.Although the authorities would want to hunt down the scammers, he claims that doing so is generally impractical.″It takes up a lot of time, and it’s difficult to explore deeper than we did,″ he said of the situation.Catching them on their Wi-Fi account is nearly impossible unless there is some sort of financial loss and we catch them red-handed,″ says the investigator. At the very least, Fredrics did not suffer a financial setback, although it is still unclear what happened to his credit rating. He’s keeping a close check on his credit report right now.

    • To yet, there has been no indication that he has received a new Visa card.
    • If you get any unusual deliveries at your door, keep Fredrics’ story in mind and be aware that fraudsters may be attempting to steal your identity.
    • And, if you believe your identity has been compromised, take the procedures outlined below to safeguard yourself.

Zscaler Troubleshooting – All You Need To Know

    1. It is hoped that this guide may be of use in debugging Zscaler cases.
    2. Case 1: The website is not functioning properly: – – – – – – – – – – Check to see if the website is accessible from your computer or mobile device.
    3. Use the website to see if the website is accessible from different geographical locations.
    4. a.
    5. If the website works on your end but not on the end of the client, this would indicate that Zscaler is the source of the problem.
    1. Make sure the website is in the correct category before performing any SSL/Auth Bypass, since a few categories have already been added to Auth/SSL Bypass, and adding the website specifically would make no impact.
    2. b.Utilize the F12 Developer tools in your browser to examine the header trace for any redirections.
    3. If you notice any additional domains, be sure to check the category of those domains and try adding the redirected domain to the SSL/Auth configuration.
    4. c.If the website is still not functioning properly, we must determine whether it is functioning well from any other customer site.
    5. If it is working at another site, it is likely that the Zscaler Public of the afflicted location is being blocked at the Webserver End of the network.
    1. It may be necessary to redirect the website to another Node in the PAC file, or to ask the user to collaborate with the Web Master in order to unlock the Zscaler IP address.
    2. d.If the problem occurs at all locations/sites, instruct the user to download and install wireshark on their computer.
    3. Collect wireshark captures and header trace data with and without the use of the Zscaler tool.
    4. Examine the screenshots, and if you are unable to locate anything, file a case with Zscaler and provide all of the pertinent information.

When bringing a case, use the language listed below: – 1.Output from the website ip.zscaler.com 2.Assess web insights records for each user and each affected website.3.Wireshark and header trace with and without Zscaler, as well as a comparison.e.If the website is hosted on the Customer Environment’s internal network, the website will not function properly through Zscaler since there will be no DNS resolution. In such circumstances, websites must be skipped from the PAC file or sent to Private Zen in the PAC file, respectively.Case 2: Application access issues when using the Zscaler APP – To identify if Zscaler is the source of the problem, switch off the Zscaler APP on the user’s computer and verify application access.

    1. If it is working, Zscaler is the source of the problem.
    2. a.
    3. Inquire with the user about any URLs that have been associated with the application.
    • In the event that they do so, Make sure the website is in the correct category before performing any SSL/Auth Bypass, since a few categories have already been added to Auth/SSL Bypass, and adding the website specifically would make no impact.
    • b.If the URLs are not known, instruct the user to download and install Wireshark on their computer.
    • Take a wireshark capture with and without Zscaler and compare the results.
    • Take a look at the screenshots for the URL domains.
    • In the event that their domain is not included, try including them in the Auth/SSL bypass.
    • Site has a source IP restriction – Some websites are not accessible through the open internet and require IP whitelisting on their end to function properly.

In such cases, if the website is not functioning properly at our end, we should inquire of the user whether they are aware of any IP restrictions at the webmaster’s end.A.If there is an IP limitation, such websites must be bypassed in the PAC file, and the user must have their public IP whitelisted at the WebServer end, or the user must have Zscaler’s public subnet bypassed if bypassing the website is not permitted.Case 4: A website employs a non-standard port number: Only a few websites, for example, function on non-standard ports, such as Port 89 via TCP/IP.The Zscaler App does not accept traffic on non-standard ports and will route it directly to the destination. The following syntax is available in all Forwarding PAC files and may be used in the aforementioned scenario if you are using the Forwarding PAC file to send traffic to Zscaler directly rather than via the APP.Case 5: A problem with Zscaler’s performance: – Issues with slowness can be classified into two categories: 1.Slowness with a certain application or website:- -If the slowness is with a specific program or website, first determine if the issue is caused by Zscaler or not.

    1. – The quickest and most straightforward method of accomplishing this is to disable Zscaler APP if users are currently use ZAPP or to remove Proxy PAC.
    2. It is necessary for this to function that the traffic on port 80/443 be allowed on their network.
    3. – If the website is operating normally and without any noticeable slowdowns, check to see if Zscaler is doing an SSL scan for the category or URL in question.
    4. If you answered yes, you may skip the SSL scan and attempt accessing the site.
    5. – If the steps above did not address the issue, then download the ZMTR utility from the following link: Utilize the ZMTR tool to trace to the target webserver in order to determine the website’s response time.

Due to the geographic distance between the website and the Zscaler Node, latency when passing via Zscaler can be rather severe in some circumstances. It is possible to have traffic either re-directed to another Zscaler Node/Pzen of the company or altogether bypassed from Zscaler in such instances if Zscaler is unable to assist. When there is high internet traffic, the site can become unresponsive.

In rare instances, the entire site becomes unresponsive due to internet slowness. In such cases, the first step is to examine the overall health of the internet circuit as well as the circuit’s utilization. If both tests are normal, then proceed to the next step for Zscaler.

-Go to the domain on which the firm is registered, such as Zscaler.net or ZscalerOne.net, and choose that domain. The state of each Cloud Node may be found by selecting TAB Cloud status and scrolling down.-In the example above, we can see that Node Johannesburg is completely green, which indicates that the node’s status is excellent and that Zscaler has not recorded any incidents on this node.-In addition, we may navigate to the Incidents TAB to see if any incidents linked to the Node are now taking place, as seen in the example below for the NYC III Datacenter. The best feasible fix in situations such as the ones described above is to reroute traffic to a backup datacenter that is closer by using a PAC file, a GRE, or an IPSEC tunnel, depending on the deployment.

Zscaler is currently examining the situation.Gather logs to transmit to Zscaler TAC for slowness inquiry by following the steps outlined below.- 1.Take a snapshot of the website ip.zscaler.com.2.On the ip.zscaler.com website, select Connection Quality and then click on the Start Test button to begin the test.Download and save the results of your search.

Visit the website and download the ZMTR tool.Run the test as directed by the website and save the results. When you’re surfing a few websites, take a few Wireshark grabs from the system.5.Zip all of the outputs and logs together and submit them to the Zscaler case.

Visa, Fiserv tapped to get stimulus payments to hard-to-reach taxpayers

    • Troubleshooting Zscaler Cases will be made easier with the aid of this guide. In the first instance, the website is not functioning correctly. I’m sorry, but I don’t understand what you’re trying to say. Inspect your machine or mobile device to see if the website is operational on your end of the line. Utilize the website to determine whether or not the website is accessible from various geographic areas. It is possible that Zscaler is the source of the problem if the website works at your end but not at the customer’s. Make sure the website is in the correct category before performing any SSL/Auth Bypass, since a few categories have already been added to Auth/SSL Bypass, and adding the website manually would make little impact. If there is a redirection, take a header trace using the F12 Developer tools in the browser. If you see any additional domains, be sure to check the category of those domains and try adding the redirected domain to the SSL/Auth section of the configuration. We will need to check if the website is still down from any other customer sites if the website is still down. If it is working at another site, it is likely that the Zscaler Public of the afflicted location is being blocked at the Webserver End of the connection. It may be necessary to redirect the website to another Node in the PAC file, or to ask the user to collaborate with the Webmaster in order to unblock the Zscaler IP address. Request that users download and install the wireshark software on their computers if a problem occurs at all locations or sites. With and without Zscaler, collect wireshark captures and header trace, then compare the results. If you are unable to locate anything in the captured images, file a case with Zscaler and provide all of the relevant information. In order to file a case, please use the following information: The output from ip.zscaler.com is shown in Figure 1. 2.Assess web insights records for each user and for each affected website. Using Wireshark and header trace, both with and without Zscaler, you can see the differences. This means that the website will not function properly through Zscaler if the website is internal to the Customer Environment. This is because there will be no DNS resolution. PAC files need to be modified in such instances so that websites are skipped or sent to Private Zen. The following case is an example of how to establish whether Zscaler is the source of the problem: switch off Zscaler APP on the user’s computer and check application access. If it is working, Zscaler is the problem. Case 3: Issue with Application While Using Zscaler APP Ascertain whether the user is aware of any URLs that have been associated with the Application. b. In the event that they do, Make sure the website is in the correct category before performing any SSL/Auth Bypass, since a few categories have already been added to Auth/SSL Bypass, and adding the website manually would make little impact. Request that the user install Wireshark on their computer if the URLs are not known. Try both using Zscaler and without it when you capture with wireshark! Consider the screenshots for each of the URL domain names. In the event that their domain is not included, try adding them to the Auth/SSL bypass list. Site has a source IP restriction – Some websites are not accessible through the open internet and require IP whitelisting on their end to be operational. If we discover that the website is not functioning properly on our end, we should inquire of the user whether they are aware of any IP restrictions at the webmaster’s end. It is necessary to bypass such websites in the PAC file and for the user to have his or her public IP whitelisted at the WebServer end, or to have his or her Zscaler’s public subnet bypassed if the website is not permitted to be bypassed. 4. A website that utilizes a non-standard port is described as follows: For example, there are a few sites that operate on non-standard ports (e.g. Port 89 via TCP/IP). As a result, Zscaler App will not accept traffic on non-standard ports and will route it directly to the destination. The following syntax is available in all Forwarding PAC files and may be used in the same scenario if you are using the Forwarding PAC file to send traffic to Zscaler directly rather than through the APP: Problem with Zscaler’s responsiveness in Case 5 – Generally speaking, there are two types of slowness issues: 1.Slowness with a certain application or website:- -If the slowness is with a specific program or website, the first step is to determine whether the issue is caused by Zscaler. – The quickest and most straightforward method of accomplishing this is to disable Zscaler APP if users are currently use ZAPP or to remove Proxy PAC altogether. In order for this to operate, they must enable traffic on the ports 80/443 on their system. – It is important to examine if Zscaler is doing SSL inspection for the category or URL in question if the website appears to be operating OK. Pass through the SSL check and try to gain access if you have a yes answer. – However, if the previous procedure did not address the problem, then you need download the ZMTR utility from the following link: When tracing to a target webserver, you may find out how long it takes for a webpage to load. Due to the geographic distance between the website and the Zscaler Node, latency through Zscaler can be rather substantial in some circumstances. It is possible to have traffic either re-directed to another Zscaler Node/Pzen of the company or totally bypassed from Zscaler in such situations if Zscaler is unable to assist. When there is high internet traffic, the site might become unresponsive. In rare instances, the entire site becomes unresponsive. As a first step, the health of the internet circuit as well as its utilization must be determined in these situations. The following procedures should be followed if both are normal. To achieve this, go to ZscalerOne.net or any other domain where the firm is registered and choose it from the drop-down menu. In the TAB Cloud State, choose each Cloud Node and scroll down to view their current status. Node Johannesburg is completely green in the example above, indicating that everything is in working order on this node and that Zscaler has not received any reports of incidents on this node. We may also navigate to the Incidents TAB to see whether any incidents linked to the Node are currently taking place, as seen in the example below for NYC III Datacenter (New York City). The best feasible fix in situations such as the ones described above is to reroute traffic to a backup datacenter that is closer by using a PAC file, a GRE, or an IPSEC tunnel, depending on the deployment. Zscaler is currently studying the situation.. Gather logs to transmit to Zscaler TAC for slowness inquiry by following the steps outlined in this section. To do this, take a snapshot of the website ip.zscaler.com. 2.On the ip.zscaler.com website, select Connection Quality and then click on the Start Test button to begin the testing procedure. Save the findings on your computer. Visit the website, download the ZMTR utility, and run the tests as instructed on the website, save the findings. 3. When you’re surfing a few websites, take Wireshark samples of the system. In the Zscaler situation, you should zip all of the outputs/logs together.

Fiserv announces partnership with PayPal and Venmo

      1. Fiserv, a provider of payments and financial services technology, announced on Wednesday that it is collaborating with Carat, an omnichannel commerce platform, to add digital payout alternatives to personal PayPal and Venmo accounts.
      2. Companies who make large distributions may now utilize the Carat channel to make direct payments to consumers’ digital accounts and wallets through the two major payment processors, Visa and MasterCard.
      3. As digital wallets gain in popularity, the agreement between the two fintech companies is aimed at providing users with speedier access to their money while also providing businesses with additional marketing options on the Venmo platform, according to the companies.
      4. According to Nandan Sheth, head of Carat and digital commerce at Fiserv, ″With the addition of payouts to PayPal and Venmo accounts via our Carat ecosystem, businesses can benefit from enhanced visibility of their brand through a logo, tagline or customized message in Venmo’s social payments platform.″ We believe that this presents our clients with a unique opportunity to generate next generation consumer experiences while maintaining the simplicity of doing so at scale by utilizing a single API.
      5. Google, Microsoft, Lyft, State Farm, and FanDuel are just a few of the companies that have partnered with Fiserv to enable pay-in and payout possibilities in a safe manner.
      1. Clients can connect with the pre-integrated solutions through API access, which is provided by the technology.
      2. While the use of Venmo and Paypal is a new feature, Carat is already capable of disbursing digital payments using consumers’ credit or debit cards, ACH, prepaid cards, and even digital checks, among other payment methods.
      3. According to a press release, Carat is already processing almost $1 billion in digital transactions every month, using exclusive payout alternatives and direct bank connections to do this.
      4. Because we have more than 400 million active accounts on the PayPal and Venmo platforms, we are able to provide businesses with a quick, easy, and cost-effective way to send money in situations such as insurance payouts or other disbursements,″ said Dan Leberman, senior vice president of partnerships at PayPal.
      5. Fiserv debuted a comparable pay-out option (without the Venmo and Paypal relationship) in April, utilizing its Money Network prepaid payroll cards and Instant Financial capabilities to provide a similar pay-out experience.
      1. Businesses were able to provide their employees with early access to their salaries thanks to the electronic delivery systems.
      2. The arrival of an era of real-time payments, according to Carrie Blankenship, director of product management at Finserv, was predicted by FinLedger in April.
      3. ″We’re still in the infancy of that,″ said Blankenship, referring to the fact that immediate payments and the rapid settlement feature of instant payments are only a few years old and have been around for less than four years.
      4. ″When you think about circumstances when money can, should, or must be accelerated, the application cases for this technology are virtually unlimited in terms of its capacity to transmit payments immediately.″

Institutions such as First National Bank of Waterloo and Belmont Savings Bank are among those that have made the decision to migrate their operations to Fiserv in order to support developing strategies and improve services.WEST BROOKFIELD, Wis.– 8th of October, 2018-(BUSINESS WIRE)- Fiserv, Inc.(NASDAQ: FISV), a leading global supplier of financial services technology solutions, said today that nineteen banks have made the choice to outsource their core account processing to Fiserv during the last nine months. Each institution will use the platform they have chosen as a basis to develop their own initiatives, and many will incorporate integrated digital banking and payment capabilities as part of their overall strategy.

      • The head of Fiserv’s Bank Solutions, Todd Horvath, stated that ″technology has redefined banking today.″ The foundation of financial relationships is created via trusting encounters, and in today’s digital age, it is more probable than not that these will take place over a device rather than across a desk.
      • An intelligent experience can be delivered across any channel with the correct core platform, and we’re delighted that so many banks have chosen Fiserv for their most significant technological choice.″ Gary Hemmer, president and chief executive officer of First National Bank of Waterloo, stated, ″Our customers’ expectations are evolving, and we are adapting with them.″ A more reliable core infrastructure will allow us to service clients in the manner that they prefer, whether it is in the branch, online or over the phone.
      • ″We chose Fiserv because they were prepared to develop with us,″ says the company.
      1. Customers of the First National Bank of Waterloo were looking for a core supplier that would allow them to connect with them using current capabilities.

The bank also wanted an affordable, real-time platform that could interface with pre-existing systems and upgrade present services.A key selling factor for the bank was that Fiserv took the time to investigate and understand the bank’s requirements, that the company had extensive experience dealing with similar financial institutions, and that it could provide examples of success.A factor in their decision-making process was the fact that several members of the bank’s personnel had previously had favorable experiences with Fiserv.

It will be easier for the bank to respond to consumer demands more rapidly, as well as engage more proactively in the development and marketing of new products for both retail and commercial customers, such as merchant capture and wire automation.Staff employees will benefit from the automation of routine duties, such as teller routines and account openings, as well as the reduction of administrative burden.Todd Cover, president and CEO of Belmont Savings Bank, stated, ″We are committed to serving our community and assisting our customers in achieving their financial goals, which is both possible and practica
