How to Package Adobe InDesign Files
- It is common practice to send PDF files to a printer or service provider, but there are some instances when you may need to submit something a little more elaborate.
- In the case when you require your printer or a design company to make adjustments to your content or graphical components, a PDF is not the best option.
- In these instances, it is customary to provide ″native files,″ which is slang for a duplicate of your original files, links, and fonts that have been modified.
- The good news is that InDesign makes this quite simple through the use of a function called ″Package.″ A copy of the original InDesign files is included in the bundle, which neatly organizes all of the links (images, documents, vector art, and so on) and fonts in one convenient location.
- It will even re-link the links so that they are compatible with the new folder!

- In order to package a document, the first step is to open the document.
- As soon as the file has been entirely loaded into InDesign, use the CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + P hotkey (COMMAND + ALT + P in OS X) or go to File > Package to begin the packaging process.
- This will cause the Package dialog box to appear on the Summary page, which will alert you if there are any problems with the packing file.
- Take note of how the package information warns us about photos that use the RGB color space in the screenshot below.
- You may also evaluate the fonts, links, colors, and other information that will be included in the package at this stage by navigating through the different sections in the Package dialog.
- For the time being, let’s proceed by selecting the Package button.
In most cases, you may safely ignore this prompt and just hit Continue; but, if you want this information to be included with the files you intend to submit, you can do so by selecting this option. During the package creation process, a text file containing the information you submit here will be included as part of the package.
Choosing What to Include in Your Package
An additional window will appear when you have finished with the Printing Instructions dialog box, inquiring where you want to save your package, what you want to call it, and what you want to include in it. There are a plethora of options available, so we’ll go over them one at a time.
Copy Fonts (Except CJK and Typekit)
- This option will contain all of the fonts that were used in your work, with the exception of CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) and Typekit fonts, which will be excluded from your package.
- CJK fonts are not included since they are typically too big, and Typekit fonts require a current Creative Cloud membership in order to be used (and are therefor not transferrable).
- It is highly recommended that you keep this option selected.
Copy Linked Graphics
This selection will decide whether or not linked documents and visuals are included in the final product. The fact that providing an InDesign document without these components is almost meaningless means that keeping this option selected is Highly Recommended.
Update Graphics Links in Package
This option instructs InDesign to re-link all of the visuals contained within the package to the InDesign document contained within the package (if applicable). Maintaining this option enabled is highly recommended unless you specifically want your service provider to seek to link to assets stored on your machine for some reason.
Use Document Hyphenation Exceptions Only
When this option is selected, text reflow is prevented when the document is accessed on a computer with a different hyphenation setting than the one on which it was created. This option is normally not necessary, however it is advised if you are sending the manuscript to a third-party editor for review.
Include Fonts And Links From Hidden And Non-Printing Content
This option bundles links and typefaces that are on hidden layers, as well as other non-printing-related material. This is not a recommended choice unless you absolutely must include these things for some reason.
- An IDML file, also known as InDesign Markup Language, is an unique type of file that allows your work to be opened in prior versions of the InDesign software (CS 4 or greater).
- The version of InDesign that will be used to edit your file may be unknown to you if you’re sending it to an outside vendor or even someone else in the workplace.
- As a result, it is highly advised that you keep this option selected.
- With this option, you may add a PDF version of your document that is formatted using any of the basic or custom PDF presets that you have available.
