Welcome to the City of Bangor, Maine

    • Bangor, Maine, was founded in 1791 and called after an Irish song of the same name, which is supposed to have been a favorite of pastor Seth Noble, who journeyed to Boston with the intended intention of calling the town Sunbury instead.
    • Until recently, it was widely assumed that the first record of European travel could be found in the notebooks of French explorer Samuel de Champlain.
    • However, this has since been proven incorrect.
    • In 1604, Champlain created a short-lived colony on an island off the coast of Maine and explored the Penobscot River all the way to the mouth of the river at Bangor, where the tide was high.
    • Early inhabitants were drawn to the Maine coast by the prospect of fishing and fur trade.
    • European interests in the New World also aided in the establishment of communities.

France occupied the territory north and northeast of the Penobscot Valley, while more wealthier English colonies, including the Massachusetts Bay colony, populated the area south of the Penobscot Valley.During the Battle of Quebec’s Plains of Abraham in 1759, the English were able to secure their dominance over what would eventually become the northeastern United States. After 1759, a large portion of what is now Eastern Maine became a province of Massachusetts, a position that remained until 1820, when Maine gained its independence as a separate state from Massachusetts.Maine’s huge woods, which provided a steady supply of timber and naval provisions during the nineteenth century, gave unparalleled prosperity to the state and area.

    1. By the 1850s, Bangor was widely regarded as the world’s timber capital, and it was one of the busiest ports on the East Coast, with a thriving shipbuilding and commerce industry.
    2. By the twentieth century, however, the shipbuilding industry had been altered by the entrance of the era of steam and steel, and Bangor’s sawmills and shipyards had been replaced by the pulp and paper industry, which is now the main forest business in the world.
    3. Bangor is still the business and social hub of Northern, Central, and Eastern Maine today, and it always will be.
    4. Besides being the major center of retail and service enterprises in the region, it is also a hub for government, education, and career opportunities.
    • Bangor has evolved from its traditional origins in forest goods and shipbuilding to preserve its place as one of Maine’s major metropolitan centers.
    • With a diverse economy, the city has outgrown its original roots in forest products and shipbuilding.
