NC budget funds cleanup of dangerous chemicals around Fayetteville Texfi plant

The Cumberland County legislative delegation provided assistance in the cleanup of hazardous chemicals in the vicinity of an abandoned textile industry in Fayetteville, North Carolina.Cumberland County will get $220,000 from the newly enacted state budget to fund equipment that will ensure that a plume of groundwater tainted with carcinogenic chemicals near the Texfi Industries factory on Hoffer Drive never leaks into the Cape Fear River, as has happened in the past. The Fayetteville Public Works Commission will use the additional funds and technology to inject chemicals into the clay of the groundwater contamination site in order to break down the chlorinated solvents detected in the water and prevent it from being contaminated again.Despite the fact that it has been closed for more than two decades, the historic textile factory still occupies around 96 acres. The business first opened its doors in 1968 and was forced to close its doors in 2000 after the owner declared bankruptcy. After cancer-causing substances were discovered in the vicinity of the facility in the mid-1990s, the city and state began to closely monitor the abandoned factory.

    1. PWC Hoffer Water Treatment Facility, which provides municipal drinking water to Fayetteville, Fort Bragg, and nearby areas, is located right across the street from the previous facility, which has been contaminated.
    2. In eastern Fayetteville, a cloud of primarily colorless liquid used for dry cleaning and metal degreasing has been steadily drifting toward the Cape Fear River and the city’s drinking water intake, according to officials.
    3. Since then, Fayetteville has acquired ownership of the abandoned plant, which is located east of the Cape Fear River and borders the north end of the city’s Clark Park.

So yet, no contaminants have been discovered in either the river or the city’s water supply.Texfi cleaning was one of the stormwater initiatives spearheaded by Republican state Rep.John Szoka of Cumberland County, who was one of the delegates who spearheaded attempts to provide money in the state budget to stormwater projects in the county.Szoka also introduced legislation three years ago to provide $420,000 to PWC for the purchase of experimental technologies to test for the presence of toxins in groundwater.Bill Richardson of Cumberland County, a Democrat, and Republican Reps.William Brisson and Ted Davis Jr., all of whom are from Cumberland County, introduced the identical legislation in March.

The Observer published an interview with Szoka on Tuesday in which he stated that ″if this ever hits the Cape Fear, there will be no one drinking pure water in Fayetteville.″ This is the prelude to a catastrophe of biblical proportions,″ says the author.Szoka stated that if the new method proves to be successful, lawmakers want to request $9 million to finish the cleanup surrounding the Texfi factory.Money: Here’s how the $412 million in state funding that Cumberland County will receive will be spent. In a statement, Elaina Ball, general manager and chief executive officer of PWC, stated, ″PWC has worked relentlessly for years to preserve our drinking water from pollution and to find methods to eliminate contaminants.″ This, we believe, is one of the most significant steps forward in addressing the situation, especially with the backing of our local delegation.″

    Continued threats

According to Szoka, if chemicals from the textile mill end up in the Cape Fear River, they will end up contaminating drinking water supplies downstream in Bladen County and Wilmington, as previously reported by the Observer.Trichloroethene, 1,2-dichlorothene, trans-1,2-dichlorthene, and vinyl chloride are found in the groundwater beneath the Texfi plant and PWC’s water treatment facility.Tetrachloroethene is also found in the groundwater beneath the Texfi factory and PWC’s water treatment facility, according to PWC.The Environmental Protection Agency has categorized tetrachloroethene as a human carcinogen, according to their classification system.According to the Environmental Protection Agency, exposure to the chemicals may result in irritation of the upper respiratory tract and eyes, kidney dysfunction, mood and behavioral changes, impairment of coordination, dizziness, and headache, as well as several types of cancer, including bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. Two monitoring wells have been established around the water treatment facility in order to prevent polluted groundwater from the textile mill from migrating to other areas.

    1. According to PWC spokesperson Carolyn Justice-Hinson, the company lined a 12-gallon concrete tank, known as a clear well, to keep chemicals out, and they erected a drainage system to direct the plume away from the river, among other measures.
    2. Mr.
    3. Szoka stated that, despite the presence of monitoring wells, he is still worried about the spread of the chemicals.

″Providing safe drinking water is our number one responsibility,″ Ball stated.″We owe a debt of gratitude to our delegation for working tirelessly to ensure that financing for this vital project was included in the state budget.″ Kristen Johnson, an investigative reporter for Gannett, may be reached at [email protected] to The Fayetteville Observer are a great way to support local news.To subscribe to this article, click on the ″subscribe″ link at the top of this page. This item first published on The Fayetteville Observer, which can be found here: The Cumberland County budget allocates monies for the continuation of the cleanup of Texfi chemicals.
