Wesley Chapel is a census-designated place (CDP) with a land area of 6.1 square miles on the southern border of Pasco County near Interstates 75 and 275, however it is not a city.
In 2010, the United States Census Bureau counted 44,092 people as inhabitants.
It is one of the most rapidly expanding places in the United States of America.
In the 1840s, the pioneering families of Boyett(e), Gillett(e), Godwin, and Kersey acquired land concessions in the region, which they later sold.
After the War Between the States, the Stanleys and Coopers arrived, and this was when the actual surge of settlers began to take place.
According to a historical plaque, the settlement was originally known as Double Branch because of the twin streams that flowed across the Boyette property, but it was later renamed after the Methodist chapel that located on the northwest corner of SR 54 and Boyette Road.

John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, was honored by having his name given to the church.
From 1877 through 1878, the name ″Wesley Chapel″ appeared in the records of the Hernando County education board.
At this time, Pasco and Citrus Counties were merged to become Hernando County, which is now the county seat.
