Deadliest area of Jacksonville remains 32209 ZIP code
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.
— The city of Jacksonville is preparing to host the Super Bowl.
In 2018, the 32209 ZIP code in Jacksonville was the site of at least two killings each month on average, making it the city’s deadliest neighborhood once again.
With 25 killings recorded in the last year, ZIP code 32209 more than quadrupled the homicide count of the next closest ZIP code.
In the ZIP code 32218, there were eight homicides, compared to 10 in 32246, nine in 32254, and nine in 32210.
The 32209 zip code in Northwest Jacksonville, which encompasses the Grand Park, Magnolia Gardens, and Royal Terrace neighborhoods, has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous locations in the city, and it has consistently had the highest number of killings in the city each year for several years.
RELATED: In Jacksonville, the year 2018 comes to a close with as much violence as it began.
Five people under the age of 18 were among the 25 homicide victims in the area last year, according to statistics.
According to Jacksonville police records, none of those cases has been successfully resolved.
Tashawn Gallon, 7, Darryl Johnson, 14, Corey Donald, 17, and two 16-year-olds – Marquette Clark and Omarion Sparrow – were among the five minor fatalities.
They were all killed in separate incidents.Gun violence was involved in all 25 killings in the 32209 zip code.A transsexual lady who was shot and killed between two abandoned houses in June was one of the 32209 victims, one of seven females overall. There were no suspects in the case, according to the police. In addition, police have not identified any suspects in a double homicide that claimed the lives of two women in August.
Deborah Ziegler, a 58-year-old woman who lived three blocks away from the crime scene, was one of those ladies.I’m trying to figure out how she got from the bus stop to this particular area,″ Tameika Mays, Ziegler’s daughter, said.″All I see are marks and smashed glass in the street, and I have no idea how she got here.″ The reason I grin on the surface is that I want everyone to know that I am OK, yet I am not fine.
Only five of the 25 instances in 32209 resulted in an arrest, and a sixth is being investigated as a justifiable homicide, according to authorities.
Victims’ families who have lost loved ones in the 32209 zip code have told News4Jax that they feel the street code of silence is to blame for leaving the vast majority of them without closure as the new year begins.
The victim’s daughter, Mays, expressed hope that someone may come forward with knowledge about her mother’s death.
″Someone told someone something about what happened that night, but nobody wants to say anything,″ Mays explained.
″They want to be able to stroll about with their mouths shut.
″I’m not sure what you’re talking about, but this is the culture in which we live.″ An arrest was made in August in connection with a triple shooting outside the Raines High School football stadium that left a 19-year-old dead.
This was one of the situations in which an arrest was made.
In one case, a 16-year-old has been charged.
The shooting death of a 19-year-old in June is the subject of a manslaughter allegation against yet another 16-year-old.For anybody who has information on any of the unsolved killings that occurred in Jacksonville last year, call the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 904-630-0500 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-866-845-TIPS.
