  • The question of how Chinese parents can get away with what they do has occupied my thoughts for a long time.
  • According to my observations, there are three significant contrasts between Chinese and Western parenting mindsets.
  • I’ve found that Western parents are particularly concerned about their children’s self-esteem, for a variety of reasons.
  • The parents are concerned about how their children will feel if they do poorly on a test or in a recital, and they are continually trying to convince their children that they are excellent performers despite their poor performance on the exam or in the recital.
  • In other words, Western parents are worried about the psychological well-being of their children.
  • Chinese parents, on the other hand, are not.

They behave in a totally different way because they believe they are strong rather than vulnerable.Suppose a youngster returns home with an A-minus on a test; a Western parent will almost certainly compliment the child on their performance.The Chinese mother would gasp in disbelief and wonder what has gone wrong.Even if the child receives a B on the test, some Western parents will still be pleased with the child’s performance.

  1. Other Western parents will sit their child down and express dissatisfaction, but they will be cautious not to make their child feel inadequate or insecure, and they will refrain from labeling their child as ″dumb,″ ″worthless,″ or ″a shame″ as a result.
  2. Privately, Western parents may be concerned that their child is not performing well on tests or demonstrating aptitude in the subject, or that there is something wrong with the curriculum, or perhaps the entire school system.
  3. They may finally organize a meeting with the school administrator in order to criticize the manner in which the topic is taught or to bring into question the teacher’s credentials if their grades do not improve.
  4. It would be a screaming, hair-tearing eruption before a Chinese youngster received a B, something that would never happen in their lives.

The distraught Chinese mother would then get dozens, even hundreds, of practice exams, which she would go through with her child for as long as it took for her child to achieve an A on the test.Chinese parents want their children to get flawless marks because they feel that their child is capable of doing so.If their child does not receive them, the Chinese parent thinks that this is due to the child’s failure to work diligently enough.

Therefore, the response to poor performance is always to criticize, reprimand, and humiliate the youngster who has failed to meet expectations.It is the Chinese parent’s hope that their child would be resilient enough to withstand the shame and learn from the experience.(And when Chinese children do achieve success, they are showered with ego-boosting parental praise in the privacy of their own homes.) Second, Chinese parents have the belief that their children owe them absolutely everything.This is due to a mix of Confucian filial piety and the fact that the parents have given so much of themselves to their offspring, which is not entirely obvious.

The fact is that Chinese moms are in the trenches, putting in long, arduous hours instructing, training, questioning and spying on their children.It is understood that Chinese youngsters must spend the rest of their life repaying their parents by following their commands and making their parents proud.In contrast, I do not believe that most Westerners hold the same perspective about children as they do about their parents being forever obliged to them.My spouse, Jed, holds the exact opposite point of view.

It was he who once stated to me, ″Children don’t select their parents.″ ″They don’t even get to choose whether or not to be born.Parents are the ones that force their children into existence, and it is the parents’ job to provide for them.Kids owe nothing to their parents and have no obligation to do so.Their duty will be to their own kids.″ This seems to me to be a horrible bargain for the Western parent to be getting.

  1. Third, Chinese parents feel that they know what is best for their children and, as a result, they overrule all of their children’s own interests and preferences in order to achieve this.
  2. That is why Chinese daughters are not allowed to have partners in high school and why Chinese children are not permitted to go sleepaway camp.
  3. It’s also the reason why no Chinese child would ever dare to declare to their mother, ″I love you.″ ″I was cast as a character in the school play!

Villager Number Six is who I am.Every day after school from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., I’ll have to stay for practice, and I’ll also need a ride home on weekends, if possible.″ God help any Chinese youngster who attempted to pull that stunt.Make no mistake: It is not the case that Chinese parents are uninterested in their children’s well-being.Quite the reverse, in fact.Anything they might give up for the sake of their children It’s just that the parenting paradigm is completely different.

Here’s a Chinese-style narrative that argues in favor of coercion.Lulu was around seven years old at the time, still playing two instruments and working on a piano piece by the French composer Jacques Ibert, titled ″The Little White Donkey.″ Despite the fact that the piece is quite adorable (you can almost envision a small donkey ambling along a rural road with its owner), it is also extremely difficult for young players to grasp since the two hands must maintain rhythms that are schizophrenic in nature.Lulu was unable to complete the task.Over the course of a week, we worked on it constantly, drilling each of her hands individually and repeatedly.However, anytime we attempted to join the hands, one hand would invariably transform into the other, and everything would come crashing down.When Lulu finally gave up and walked away from the situation the day before her lesson, everyone around her gasped in amazement.

″Get back to the piano right away,″ I instructed.″You won’t be able to force me.″ ″Oh, absolutely, I can.″ Lulu made me pay when I returned to the piano.She hit, thrashed, and kicked her way through the room.She snatched the music score from his grasp and tore it to bits.

In order to prevent it from being ruined again, I taped the score back together and placed it in a protective plastic shell.Then I loaded Lulu’s dollhouse into the van and warned her that if she didn’t finish ″The Little White Donkey″ by the next day, I’d donate it to the Salvation Army piece by piece.When Lulu remarked, ″I thought you were heading to the Salvation Army, why are you still here?″ I threatened her with no lunch, no supper, no Christmas or Hanukkah presents, no birthday celebrations for two, three, four years.When she still kept playing it wrong, I told her she was purposely working herself into a frenzy because she was secretly afraid she couldn’t do it.I told her to stop being lazy, cowardly, self-indulgent and pathetic.

According to popular belief, many Chinese secretly believe that they are more concerned about their children and are willing to make greater sacrifices for them than Westerners, who appear perfectly content to allow their children to have a negative outcome.I believe that there is a miscommunication on both sides.All decent parents want to do what is best for their children, no matter what their circumstances are.The Chinese, on the other hand, have a whole different perspective of how to go about it.
