What happens if a package is sent to the wrong place?

There are no humans to check this process as it runs in huge volumes at high speeds. Mis-sent parcels will usually be on their way to the right place the same day they arrive at the wrong place. r/usps_complaints – Has anyone else had a package head farther away from you (the delivery destination) rather than closer towards it? (Priorty Mail)

  1. Unfortunately, it was probably a new temp recruit who made a mistake during this time of year.
  2. I hate to say it because it’s not good, but it’s the truth.
  3. As long as they have a label to read, the automatic sorters that handle the priority mail envelopes are quite accurate and constant in their operations.
  1. However, if you heard some of the stories I told about my time working at a distribution center a few years ago, you’d be appalled.
  2. Every year, the United States Postal Service recruits temporary holiday workers to assist with the surge of mail.
  3. These individuals often receive little training, and unless you are fortunate enough to run across someone who is extremely friendly at the plant, no one will be willing to leave their own duties (which they will be chastised for not finishing) to come and hold your hand.
  4. There are a large number of people who are scared by the level of labor and the fact that the shifts are lengthy and the work is physically demanding.
  • In most cases, packages that are too large to fit through the envelope sorters are separated into bins that are then processed by hand and placed into bags.
  • I’m not sure how things are set up now, because apparently distribution centers are so overrun with mail that there isn’t much floor space left, but when I was there, there would typically be small sectioned off areas where a main bin full of packages would be brought in and sorted by 4-5 people into various bags with zip code tags before being sent on their way.
  • It is customary to match the last 2-3 digits of a zip code with the bag in your section, and then at the end of the night, the bags are hauled into even larger bins and loaded onto trucks to be delivered to local POs, transported via truck to another distribution center, or transported to an airport.
  • Okay, so what exactly is the issue?
  • Basically, the issue here is that it’s quite simple for someone who is not familiar with the process to mistakenly toss anything into the incorrect box.
  • As a consequence, something intended for the VA might wind up being shipped across the nation, as in your instance.
  • Even worse, despite what others may tell you, it is not uncommon for postal workers to become so dissatisfied with their jobs and their working hours that they simply stop caring and throw their mail into any sorting bag they can find and leave it for someone else to deal with further down the chain of command.

To summarize, it was probably some newcomer at the factory who either didn’t know what they were doing or for some reason simply tossed your item into the wrong sorting bag, resulting in your package making an unwelcome cross-country journey.

  1. In all seriousness, I don’t believe this should be downvoted; he’s simply asking, not complaining or being nasty, nor is he referring to ″those darn lazy union crooks″ who are ″kicking parcels and cackling.″ And, hey, he was correct in his estimate; typically, it would have taken no more than two days, at the very most.
  2. I know that when anything unexpected happens with one of the numerous parcels I send and receive through the United States Postal Service, I’m not concerned or bothered because it usually always falls within the service obligations, but I’m always intrigued as to why it happened in the first place.
  3. Just the other week, I received a parcel that arrived in my city at around 9 p.m., then traveled a couple hundred miles away to another state, yet was still delivered the next day.
