What Are Demographics?

  1. Age, ethnicity, and gender are all elements in demographic analysis, which is the study of a population based on these criteria and others.
  2. In socioeconomic terms, demographic data refers to information that has been statistically stated.
  3. Examples of demographic data include: employment, education, income, marriage rates, birth and death rates, and many more variables In order to get a better understanding of a population’s characteristics, governments, companies, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) use demographic data for a variety of objectives, including policy formation and economic market research.

Those approaching or at retirement age, as well as the percentage of those who can afford their products, are all important considerations for a firm that sells high-end recreational vehicles.

Key Takeaways

  • In the field of demography, the collecting and study of broad characteristics concerning groups of individuals and populations is called demographic analysis.
  • The information provided by demographic data is extremely important to businesses in determining how to promote to customers and in planning for future patterns in consumer demand.
  • Internet, big data, and artificial intelligence are enhancing the utility and applicability of demographics as a tool for marketing and commercial strategy in a significant way.
  • Market segments are frequently divided into groups based on age or generation.
  • Demographic information may be utilized in a variety of ways to gain a better understanding of the overall characteristics of a certain community.

Understanding Demographics

  1. In the field of demographic analysis, the gathering and analysis of data pertaining to the general characteristics of specific populations are performed.
  2. Business marketing professionals regularly employ it to find the most effective methods of reaching and assessing clients’ behaviors.
  3. A population may be segmented using demographic information, which helps businesses to estimate the size of a possible market.

The usage of demographics may assist a firm in determining whether or not its products and services are being targeted to the most influential customers in the market.Example: Market segments may be defined as a certain age group, such as baby boomers (born 1946–1964) or millennials (born 1981–1996), who have distinct purchasing patterns and characteristics.Because of the emergence of the internet, social media, prediction algorithms, and big data, the collection and use of demographic information has changed dramatically.A deluge of data is being gathered and monitored about modern customers, some of it unintentionally, through their online and offline activities by a plethora of applications, social media platforms, third-party data collectors, merchants, and financial transaction processors. With the use of artificial intelligence, this mountain of collected data can be used to forecast and target consumers’ decisions and purchasing preferences with uncanny precision based on their demographic features and previous behavior.

Types of Demographic Information

  1. In order to achieve corporate marketing objectives, demographic data is gathered in order to create a client base profile.
  2. Some of the most typical characteristics obtained in demographic research are age, sexual orientation, income level, race, occupation, place of residence, homeownership, and educational attainment.
  3. In order to identify clients, demographic information is used to draw certain assumptions about groups.

Additional demographic criteria include acquiring information on preferences, interests, lifestyle, and other aspects of one’s personality. When conducting a national census, government organizations collect data that may be used to anticipate economic patterns and population increase, allowing them to better manage limited resources.A large group of people can be polled to acquire demographic information, which can then be broken down into smaller subsets to do more detailed research.

Special Considerations

  1. The majority of large corporations perform demographic research in order to identify how to effectively sell their product or service and reach the most people possible.
  2. It is beneficial to understand your existing customers as well as the potential customers that may come your way in the future.
  3. Demographic trends are especially important since the size of different demographic groups fluctuates throughout time as a result of changes in economic, cultural, and political conditions.

This information aids the firm in determining how much capital should be allocated to manufacturing and advertising activities. For example, the aging population in the United States has unique requirements that businesses wish to anticipate.Consumer spending trends in each market segment may be determined for each market segment.Older demographic groups spend more money on healthcare items and medications, and the way in which companies communicate with these clients differs from the way in which they communicate with younger demographic groups.

Why Do Demographics Matter?

  1. In the context of marketing, demographics is the description or distribution of traits among a target audience, client base, or population.
  2. Governments utilize socioeconomic information to better understand the age distribution, racial mix, and income distribution (among a variety of other characteristics) in neighborhoods, cities, states, and nations in order to make better public policy decisions at the local, state, and national levels.
  3. Sociodemographic information is used by businesses in order to create more successful marketing and advertising campaigns and to identify patterns among diverse audiences.

Who Collects Demographic Data?

  1. The United States Census Bureau gathers demographic data on the American population every year through the American Community Survey (ACS) and every ten years through an in-depth count of every American home, which is conducted by the Bureau of the Census.
  2. To gather demographic information on users, customers, or prospective client groups, businesses may employ marketing departments or contract with specialist marketing agencies.
  3. Academic scholars also gather demographic information for research objectives through the use of a variety of survey tools.

Additionally, political parties and campaigns gather demographic information in order to better tailor message for political candidates.

Why Do Businesses Need Demographics?

  1. In today’s corporate world, demographics are critical.
  2. They aid in the identification of specific members of an audience by choosing important qualities, wants, and requirements from among those present.
  3. This enables businesses to target their marketing efforts specifically at certain parts of their client base.

Over the past decade, online advertising and marketing have made significant strides in the use of algorithms and big data analysis to micro-target advertisements on social media to highly particular demographics.

How Are Demographic Changes Important for Economists?

  1. Economists are well aware that population increase is one of the most important drivers of economic growth.
  2. When it comes to recognizing this, there is a direct relationship: Growing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) = Growing Population + Growing Gross Domestic Product (GDP/capita), where GDP per capita is simply GDP divided by the total population of the country.
  3. The greater the number of people in an area, the greater the number of available employees in the labor force, as well as the greater the number of people who consume goods such as food, energy, automobiles, and clothing.

There are also demographic challenges on the horizon, such as an increased number of retirees who, despite the fact that they are no longer in the employment, are predicted to live for longer periods of time.Unfortunately, the number of new births appears to be insufficient to replace the number of retirees who are leaving the workforce.

Google Analytics Demographics: Hit or Miss?

  1. Google said in Q4 2013 that Analytics will now be able to include demographic information, such as age, gender, and interest/affinity categories, into the reporting process.
  2. What sources does Google use to obtain inside information?
  3. Many criteria have been identified, including your Google+ profile, prior Google searches, and the websites you’ve visited in the last few months (which is based on cookies from sites within the Google Display Network).

If you go into your ad settings, you can really see what Google thinks of your company.Although they had my gender and age correct, the interest categories were a little incorrect, as I discovered when I checked (Banking, East Asian music, and Hair Care are the standout NOPES).

So this begs the question: How do Google’s “inferences” about page viewers affect advertisers?

Jerome’s Furniture’s Scott Perry, Director of Ecommerce, offers his perspective: ″For our business and product category, females often have the largest impact on purchasing decisions, and Google Analytics data substantiates this pattern.″ According to our Analytics, women convert at a 30% higher rate than males, spend almost twice as much, and have a per-visit value that is nearly double the national average.According to this, I should pay particular attention to and target women with my display advertising campaigns, since the Google Display Network is one of the best programs for focusing on certain demographic groups.Another interesting insight I discovered in Google Analytics (″Demographic Interests″) was that we convert 50% better for users who are searching for real estate websites.Given the fact that people who are looking to buy a home also want furnishings, this is a logical conclusion.I can more aggressively target this qualified portion of my audience as a result of this information.

  1. Although Google Analytics demographics data is not always 100 percent correct, it provides a useful picture of my target market and allows me to make educated judgments about how I should target certain audience groups.

Google Analytics Demographics and Your Advertising Campaigns

The integration of Google Analytics data with your advertising campaigns (including PPC, AdWords, and display advertisements) is a no-brainer if you want to maximize your results. When it came to forecasting gender, the Google Analytics demographics data was quite accurate, but it was less accurate when it came to predicting age.Nevertheless, the affinity categories, which can, at the at least, give an actionable picture of your target market, are the most significant benefit that advertisers can derive from this new connection.

ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs)

Zones of ZIP Code Tabulation Regions (ZCTAs) are generalized areal representations of ZIP Code service areas provided by the United States Postal Service (USPS).The United States Postal Service ZIP Codes are used to identify the specific post office or metropolitan area delivery station that is linked with a mailing address.ZIP Codes assigned by the United States Postal Service are not geographic features, but rather a collection of postal delivery routes. The acronym ZCTA was used to distinguish between this entity and genuine United States Postal Service ZIP Codes.ZCTA is a registered trademark of the United States Census Bureau, and ZIP Code is a registered trademark of the United States Postal Service.

How ZCTAs are Created

The Census Bureau began by looking at all of the addresses inside each census block in order to create a list of ZIP Codes organized by census block.Following that, the ZIP Code with the highest frequency of occurrence inside each census block was allocated to the whole census block as a preliminary ZCTA code.Having allocated preliminary ZCTA codes to all of the census blocks with addresses, the blocks were grouped together according to their ZCTA codes to form bigger regions.Census Bureau allocated blocks that included addresses but did not have a single most often happening ZIP Code to the ZCTA with which they shared the longest common border because they did not have a single most frequently occurring ZIP Code.If the size of an unassigned enclave was less than two square miles, it was assigned to the ZCTA that bordered the enclave in question.

  1. Unassigned blocks were identified and grouped together by the Census Bureau using block group boundaries.
  2. A ZCTA close to these unassigned blocks was combined into another ZCTA based on the length of the shared border.
  3. When creating the Census 2000 ZCTAs, the Census Bureau chose letters that ended in ″XX″ to symbolize huge expanses of land that did not have ZIP Codes, and letters that ended in ″HH″ to indicate big amounts of water that did not have ZIP Codes.
  4. Huge bodies of water and large unpopulated land regions did not have ZCTAs in 2010, according to the Census Bureau.
  5. Residential and nonresidential ZIP Codes from the Census Bureau’s MAF/TIGER database were used to construct ZCTAs, which were then used to create ZCTAs.
  6. It is not necessary for ZIP Codes designated to companies exclusively or ZIP Codes with a single delivery point address to show as ZCTAs.

In the majority of cases, the ZCTA code and the ZIP Code for a given region are the same. When the Census Bureau created ZCTAs, they used the ZIP Code that was used the most frequently in the region to determine the ZCTA code.As a result, certain addresses will have a ZCTA code that is different from their ZIP Code.

Some ZIP Codes include just a small number of addresses (in some cases, only one), and as a result, they will not appear in the ZCTA universe.

Key Differences between Census 2000 and 2010 Census ZCTAs
