12v socket or smokers’ pack, what the difference?

Sat 26 Jan 2008 13:18 12v socket or smokers’ pack, what the difference? -mfarrow
Hi Was trying to figure this one out the other night. What’s the difference between buying a car new with a 12v socket and having a smokers’ pack fitted? I was under the impression that 12v sockets were generally unlit and limited to 10A (as per the cover).Cigarette lighter sockets I thought were generally lit and went to 15A. In this case is the fitting of the smokers’ pack by the manufacturers involve the installation of an uprated socket or do they just plug in a lighter? Thanks

BMW (quite stylishly) in the E46 made the ash tray so it would work as additional oddments tray. They included an insert and a lighter with the smoker’s pack. If I recall it was a no cost deletion or option.

With my Vectra-C, the 12v accessory socket is marginally smaller in diameter and therefore unable to insert a cigarette lighter. As PU says, the ashtray fitted doubles up as an oddments tray.

I had two mk1 Focuses, one with smokers pack and one without. The difference as far as I could make out was a plastic cover with ″12v power outlet″ written on it to push into the socket instead of a fag lighter, and a felt-type lining in what would have been the ashtray to turn it into an oddment tray. The size and shape was identical though. Cheers DP

ALB, VTEC, 4WS, adaptive traction control. I should have stayed out of this – in all my nearly 58 years I’ve never got round to trying smoking. Therefore I have a Lidl-sourced 2-way adaptor replacing the lighter in my 12v socket. But when the lighter’s in it I am very careful to see the little cigarette symbol is straight. 😉

My Mazda6 came with a cigarette lighter – not that I’d use it anyway. but it’s a company vehicle and therefore a place of work so it’s illegal to smoke in it so why the lighter;-) Suppose you could use it to light up a cigarette/cigar out of the car? Reminds me I ought to display the no smoking sign now I have found it in with the car manual etc. It’s also illegal to smoke in my home office/spare bedroom because it too is a place of work.

About Smokers Pack

  1. The Smokers Pack in a car is something that you have to specifically request these days when purchasing a new vehicle.
  2. It entails the provision of an ash tray and a cigarette lighter.
  3. Because you can put spare change in the ash tray and connect your navigation system into the lighter, I believe everyone should purchase one.
  4. More significantly, it’s about the only item you’ll receive for free from a vehicle dealer, which is rare these days.
  5. Even if you don’t smoke, you should order it.

The Smokers Pack website tries to provide unbiased reviews on all vehicles on the road, both new and old.Founder and Editor-in-Chief Bob Flavin has been a lifelong automotive enthusiast since his early childhood, and as a teenager, he could determine what car was coming down the road by the form of the headlights at night. After a long career in the automobile industry, he was invited to write a review of a new car for a newspaper. He enjoyed the experience so much that he began reviewing automobiles for other web sites.Greetings and welcome to the Smokers Pack.

Please contact us if you would like to submit your vehicle for consideration (any vehicle).Write a review for me if you consider yourself as a motoring writer, and it could just end up in print. There are no limitations on the type of automobile you may talk about, and there are no restrictions on what you can say as long as you refrain from using foul language. To contact me, please use the email address provided, or you may follow me on Twitter.

One problem I didn’t realize right away when I first got my car is that there is no ashtray or 12V outlet in the center console, which is directly in front of the shift lever. Instead, there is only an open storage pocket to be found. When I contacted BMWNA about this, I was informed that the Smoker’s Package was no longer available for 3 series vehicles as of March 2009. Is this correct? Every car I test drove at the dealership had the Smoker’s Package, and the 3 series coupe sales brochure showed the package, so I figured my car would have it as well. I was wrong. If this package is no longer included with the 3 series, can someone confirm that this is the case, or did the dealer make a mistake when I ordered my car? Thanks,

  • Post Likes: 9 Total Post Likes: 9 Received:0 An additional 12V outlet may still be found behind the armrest in the center console of the vehicle. However, if you have something plugged in, you will be unable to close the armrest. When driving a manual gearbox automobile, this is really inconvenient.
  • According to what I’ve read, there is an electrical outlet on the passenger side console area. I’m not sure if it is correct or not. It would be a blunder on BMW’s part to just place the 12V outlet beneath the armrest. Except for the early build ’09s, there is no ashtray or lid. There is no standard premium sound on the 2009s, unlike the 2007 and 2008. The cost of automobiles, as well as the cost of less common items, is increasing.
  • From the dealer parts department, a smokers package may be bought and retrofitted. counter Following is a politically correct plug that is required: While it is absolutely feasible to retrofit a Smoker’s package into your vehicle, I would like to respectfully suggest that you consider participating in a smoking cessation program. Cigarette smoke may leave an unpleasant stain and odor in your vehicle’s interior, which may detract from the vehicle’s resale value. However, this is nothing compared to the harm that smoking does to your health and the health of those around you. The meddling plug came to an end. As previously said, you may probably have the Smoker’s package retrofitted into your car if that is what you desire.
  • Although 328coupe _may_ desire the ″smoker’s bundle″ for the purpose of smoking, the lack of a straightforward way of plugging in any of the _countless_ electronic gadgets that may be powered by a standard 12v lighter socket is a major annoyance.
  • One of two things has happened: either BMW’s engineers or N.A. have completely lost touch with their customers in the United States, or accounting demands for cost reductions have completely overridden reality.
  • It is completely RIDICULOUS that the conventional power socket (which does not need the user to select an arcane option-box) would be put under an armrest in such an uncomfortable and unnecessary location. What happened to the form-follows-function philosophy and driver-centric cockpit ergonomics that were once a trademark of BMW vehicles? Bah!
  • The good news is that you have something better than the traditional ash tray / power plug outlet – continue reading! There is a 12v outlet in the black plastic section beneath the dashboard on the passenger side, underneath the glove box (not inside), on the passenger side. This is an excellent location since, as you mentioned, there are difficulties in shutting the top of the arm rest. People have commented in previous blogs that they wish their car had this feature instead of the ashtray and outlet. I wish my 1/09 build 328xi had something like this
  • it would be a fantastic spot for my blackberry. If my memory serves me correctly, your open bin is rubber lined, similar to the region behind the shifter in a non-i drive car. Is this correct? There are OEM components available to alter the open panel on the back base of your arm rest (back seat) to incorporate two 12v plugs if you want more power outlets. I remember seeing a post about this with pictures a while back. Not sure if it was here or on bimmerpost, but it was there.

  1. Post Likes: 9 Total Post Likes: 9 Received:0 In fact, I investigated last night and the additional outlet is really located beneath the dashboard! Because of its presence, I can now put my armrest down while also charging my GPS device at the same time! Despite this, the placement under the dashboard is inconvenient to utilize and cannot be done securely while the vehicle is in motion. This outlet was not mentioned in my owner’s handbook, which still refers to the ashtray as the primary power source. The company did a poor job, in my opinion, of explaining this change to its customers. In terms of the storage bin being rubber lined, you are accurate. It is the same as the one beneath the gear shifter. Because BMW does not have an overhead storage bin, it is a convenient location for my sunglass case to be stored.
  2. You are accurate in your assessment of the new position of the outlet
  3. nonetheless, I believe that only a minority of people would agree that it is an excellent placement.
  4. Despite the fact that I wish I had it, it beats the arm rest.

  4. According to the researchers, secondhand smoke causes automobile interiors to become contaminated with ″residual tobacco smoke pollution (TSP)″ over a period of time.
  5. Researchers discovered that even a single cigarette smoked in a car created an extraordinarily high quantity of ″fine respirable particles″ from the secondhand smoke, according to the findings of their study.

Travelling in a smoker’s car for just ONE HOUR can damage your health

  • Non-smokers who sat in a car with a smoker for an hour had higher levels of carcinogens and other pollutants in their urine than non-smokers who did not smoke.
  • A groundbreaking research that reveals the serious hazards of secondhand smoking.
  • According to renowned research, the toxic compounds revealed in tobacco are the’most significant’ among thousands of chemicals found in tobacco that cause smoking-related illness.

  2. One hour spent in a car with a smoker can be harmful to a person’s health, since they are exposed to potentially harmful quantities of hazardous substances, according to new research published this week.
  3. Non-smokers who were exposed to secondhand smoke from three cigarettes while in the automobile had higher levels of carcinogens and other pollutants in their urine than those who did not smoke.
  4. Researchers at the University of California have reported that secondhand smoke in automobiles and other vehicles provides a potentially serious health danger to those who are exposed to it.
  5. The passengers had elevated amounts of butadiene, acrylonitrile, benzene, methylating agents, and ethylene oxide, according to the results of the study.

In a study conducted by scientists at the University of California, they discovered that non-smokers who traveled in a car with a smoker for an hour – while the smoker smoked three cigarettes – had elevated amounts of harmful substances in their urine.(Image from a file) Professor Neal Benowitz, a prominent scientist, stated that this group of toxic compounds is ″considered to be the most significant among the hundreds of hazardous chemicals found in tobacco smoke that cause smoking-related illness.″ ‘Ours is the first study to quantify exposure to these specific compounds in persons who have been exposed to secondhand smoking,’ he explained further. This suggests that non-smokers are exposed to a wide range of potentially harmful chemicals from tobacco smoke while just sitting in automobiles with smokers, compounds that have been linked to cancer, heart disease, and lung illness.Non-smokers seated in the right rear passenger seat of an automobile, directly behind an active smoker in the driver’s seat, were the subjects of the study. In an hour, the smokers each smoked three cigarettes while the front and back windows were opened approximately four inches on each side.

The non-smokers’ urine was tested for indicators of nine chemical components contained in cigarette smoke before they were exposed to the smoke and again eight hours after they were exposed to the smoke. All of the substances have been linked to cancer, cardiovascular illness, and respiratory disease in some way.Following exposure to secondhand smoke, there was a statistically significant rise in seven biomarkers.″This suggests that people, particularly children and adults with pre-existing health issues such as asthma or a family history of heart disease, should be safeguarded against secondhand smoke exposure in automobiles,″ said Dr Gideon St Helen, the study’s primary author.’The harmful compounds that the scientists looked for are believed to be the most significant among the thousands of chemicals found in tobacco smoke that cause smoking-related sickness,’ the experts wrote in a statement.

Lung cancer under a microscope is seen in this image. However, the team did provide a word of warning.According to the researchers, the findings may not accurately depict smoking in most automobiles since the stationary vehicle utilized in the study would provide less ventilation than a moving vehicle.Dr.St Helen said, ″However, the air samples we collected had a composition that was comparable to that of prior smoking studies that had utilized closed automobiles and cars with different ventilation systems operating.″ We thus consider that the broad amounts of risk to nonsmokers that we have presented are reasonable in nature.’ The findings of the study were published in the American Association for Cancer Research journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, which is published quarterly.

Smokers Can Still Find Respite — and Ashtrays — in Their Cars

  4. Please understand that I have nothing against cigarette smokers, but the last time smokes looked cool was in the movie ″Pulp Fiction,″ when John Travolta and Uma Thurman chain-smoked while eating cheeseburgers, steaks, and $5 milkshakes.
  5. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of individuals in the United States who smoke cigarettes has decreased from almost 25 percent in 1997 to slightly more than 15 percent in 2015.

This is a significant reduction from the nearly 25 percent in 1997.Meanwhile, during the past two decades, more than half of the states in the United States have passed legislation prohibiting smoking indoors. It appears that one of the last places smokers have left to indulge in their addiction is in the safety and privacy of their own vehicle — but even that has begun to go up in flames in recent years as well.As less and fewer auto manufacturers provide automobile ashtrays as standard equipment, cigarette smokers will be without an ashtray for the foreseeable future.Despite the fact that fewer people smoke these days, the lack of an ashtray nevertheless leaves many drivers and passengers without a secure location to dispose of ash.

Because ash from cigarettes often ends up in other people’s cars, it is not a good idea to throw it out the window.Furthermore, ash from cigarettes is one of the leading causes of wildfires.Consequently, where are smokers expected to dispose of their ash and cigarette butts in the absence of an ashtray? Are there any automobiles that still come equipped with ashtrays as standard equipment?Smoking in a car with children is now illegal, according to a report from business news publication Quartz.

According to Quartz, by the time Hyundai announced in late 2013 that it would eliminate what used to be known as the cigarette lighter in its cars and replace it with a USB charging port, the movement away from accommodating smoking motorists had already been gaining momentum for nearly two decades.According to Quartz, Chrysler was one of the companies who helped start the trend in 1994 with the release of its first automobiles without ashtrays in more than 50 years. It has been over a decade since the little push-in lighter, which used the car’s circular 12-volt connector to heat up coil springs, was discontinued, and the jack has been repurposed to allow drivers to plug in portable electronic gadgets such as radar detectors and cell phone chargers.Cars.com was curious how many cars manufacturers supplied automobile ashtrays and smoking accessories as standard or optional options, especially in light of the recent disappearance of smoker-friendly devices such as in-console lighters and ashtrays. It turns out to be quite a bit if you’re ready to put in the extra effort and money.According to a check of Cars.com’s inventory, you can locate a car with a front-mounted lighter and ashtray, and in some cases, even a rear-mounted ashtray, on roughly 700 model-year 2015 automobiles from nearly two dozen manufacturers.

If all you need is an ashtray, whether it’s factory-installed or a dealer-installed option, you can still acquire one on roughly three dozen automakers’ vehicles, which total more than 4,000 models.Drivers, on the other hand, are frequently required to pay extra for the ashtray option.

  2. If you enjoy holding a cigarette in one hand while navigating with the other, Bentley makes one of the most enticing-sounding models.

  5. ″While smoking in a Bentley is certainly not for everyone, it is only fitting that our designers have created a most stylish means of doing so.″ It is made up of an anti-slip mat, an ashtray for cigars with the Bentley logo embossed on it, and a cigar lighter with the Bentley logo embossed on it.″ “ However, unlike a Bentley or the habit of smoking itself, the smoker’s bundle is not exactly inexpensive.

On the 2015 Continental GT, a front ashtray with a cigar lighter costs $340, while ashtrays and cigar lighters in both the front and back cost $415, depending on the configuration. The 2015 Aston Martin V8 Vantage’s, which come with an ashtray and cigar lighter, will set you back $570, while the 2015 Ferrari 458 Italia’s will cost you $578, according to the manufacturer. In contrast, the 2015 Porsche Cayenne with front and rear cigarette lighters and ashtrays is available without charge as an optional feature on the vehicle. It is not necessary to have a lot of money in order to enjoy the luxury of smoking while driving, so don’t be concerned. While the aforementioned vehicles range in price from $60,000 to $250,000, you can also get a 2015 Ford Fiesta with factory-installed features for a lower price.

In certain cases, automobile manufacturers include car ashtrays that are made to fit in the cupholders of their smoker’s packages to attract customers. There are also universal cupholder ashtrays available that may be used in virtually any style of automobile. To be sure, picking this as a solution involves giving up one of your already-limited number of cupholder options. In spite of the continuous availability of smoking accoutrements such as car ashtrays and lighters, environmental health and safety rules and cultural shifts continue to crack down on smokers, who are increasingly making their way inside the cabins of their automobiles to do their thing. The majority of states already have rules prohibiting smoking in a car with a youngster in tow, and more are expected to follow.

Although it’s unlikely that smokers’ automobile accessories like as ashtrays will be completely eliminated in the future, you’ll still be able to plug your smokeless e-cigarette into the USB port that used to be reserved for your lighter in the event that one is eliminated. The Editorial section at Cars.com is your go-to source for automotive news and reviews.Editors and reviewers at Cars.com are prohibited from accepting gifts or free vacations from automobile manufacturers, in accordance with the company’s long-standing ethical code. The Editorial department is completely separate from the advertising, sales, and sponsored content divisions of Cars.com.com.

Smoking package? Is it the only way to get 12v to use with battery maintainer?

  1. Halfmonkey had originally posted this quote.
  2. According to what I’ve heard, you receive a cover and a 12v cigarette lighter in addition to the blank area with the smoking package instead.
  3. Is the vacant area large enough to serve as a third cup holder for something like a Coca-Cola can or a Starbucks drink if the smoking package is not present?
  4. Is there a tray of some type included with the smoking equipment to catch the ashes from cigarette smoke?
  5. My smoking habits prevent me from need the tray; yet, I am curious as to what exactly is included in the package.

As a side note, because this automobile will only be used on occasion, investing in a battery maintainer will be a wise decision.A Porsche battery charger appears to be available, and it looks to have the capability of being connected to the vehicle’s cigarette lighter to keep the battery’s charge constant. If I don’t pick for the smoking package, does that mean I’ll have to make a direct connection to the battery terminals beneath the trunk if I don’t go for the smoking package? Is that correct?Even with the smoking package in place, the pocket in that location is insufficiently wide to accommodate a standard soda can or a Starbucks beverage.

I’m guessing it can only handle a tiny can of Japanese coffee at the most at this point. With the exception of one of those really small Motorola flip phones from the early 2000s, you won’t be able to properly use a phone in that space. With the smoking package, you will receive a small ash tray that can be removed and cleaned; you will also receive a cigarette outlet as well as the small removable ash tray; however, the most significant benefit is that you will receive a flip cover that will fill in the hole where the ash tray is located. You should definitely invest in a good battery maintainer (Porsche or Noco or any other brand); it comes standard with a cigarette plug that can be used with the smoking package or (correct me if I’m wrong, but based on a 991.1) with another outlet inside the center console if you’re concerned about the battery dying between drives or while storing for the winter.A converter from the cigarette plug to alligator clips is also available from Porsche (and other manufacturers) so that the vehicle’s battery terminals may be connected to it instead of the cigarette plug terminals (what I do).
