Welcome to City of Chillicothe, Ohio

  • Chillicothe, Ohio’s first and third capitals, is located in southern Ohio along the Scioto River and was the state’s first and third capitals. In fact, it was the head settlement of one of the five major divisions of the Shawnee people that gave the town its name, which originates from the Shawnee Cha-la-gaw-tha, which means ″chief settlement of a tribe division.″ The Shawnee and their ancestors had lived in the area for thousands of years before Europeans arrived and conquered them. General Nathaniel Massie planned the location of the village on his land grant during the time of European-American colonization. It is believed that modern Chillicothe served as a focal point for the ancient Hopewell culture, which thrived from 200 BCE to 500 CE. The trading channels of this Amerindian society stretched all the way to the Rocky Mountains. Along the Scioto and Ohio River valleys, they created clay mounds for ceremonial and burial purposes to mark their territory. There were a number of later Native Americans who lived in the region during the period of European contact, such as the Shawnees. The present-day town of Chillicothe is the most recent of seven localities to bear the name, which was ascribed to the principal town wherever the Chalakatha had established after the settlement of the Chalakatha. The majority of European colonization in this area occurred after the American Revolution. Land-seeking migrants from Virginia and Kentucky made their way west along the Ohio River in quest of new opportunities. Since Ohio’s statehood in 1803 until 1810, Chillicothe has served as the state’s capital, with the exception of two years in 1810 when Zanesville functioned as the state’s capital. The relocation of the state capital to Zanesville was made possible as part of a state legislative agreement in order to approve a statute. In 1812, the assembly voted to return the state capital to Chillicothe. In 1816, the state assembly chose to relocate the capital once more, this time to Columbus, in order to place it closer to the geographic center of the state, where it would be more accessible to the majority of the population.
