OPINION: Despite its importance in the folklore of the Old West, the Pony Express only ran for 18 months between 1865 and 1868.Even though many of the Pony Express’s hardy riders would go on to become legends, the Pony Express and its fundamental operation — horse-drawn mail delivery — were rendered obsolete by American technological advances such as the telegraph and the transcontinental railroad.It was a colossal financial failure.To be sure, if our political system had been as ″advanced″ back then as it is now, Congress would have bailed out the Pony Express and kept it in a state of taxpayer-funded insanity for decades on end.As a result, the Democrats’ planned Postal Service Reform Act of 2021, which tries to keep the United States Postal Service alive by creative accounting rather than genuine, long-overdue reform, is currently being debated in Congress.Private postal services and the Internet, both of which were developed in the United States, have rendered the Post Office obsolete.

It has not responded in a serious enough way to the tremendous technological changes of the 21st century, losing billions per year for the last 15 consecutive years – totalling $87 billion.Its leadership has made lofty promises about long-term improvements for the all of that time, but has steadfastly refused to implement any meaningful reforms.This group of executives even admits that their ″business and operating strategies are unsustainable and out of sync with the changing requirements of our consumers.″ It was all of this prior to the troubles caused by the over-reaction to the coronavirus, which has driven the Post Office to the verge of collapse.As more and more people began purchasing things online, the bloated agency’s running expenditures climbed by a factor of nine billion dollars higher than earlier projections in 2020, according to the agency.Despite that, the agency continued to lose money and Democrats approved a whopping $25 billion bailout that actually prohibited any change that luckily never became law.Democrats would rather cater to a public-sector union with 200,000 members than aid taxpayers, as is so frequently the case in Washington.

However, when you have a monopoly and an unlimited supply of free money, you don’t even have to bother with that.First-class mail has traditionally been the most profitable commodity for the United States Postal Service, but since electronic greeting cards have entirely replaced physical greeting cards, that income has declined.According to a Citigroup estimate, packages are sent at a loss of around $1.46 each package, and income from first-class mail is no longer sufficient to make up for this shortfall.Sec.202 will exacerbate the situation by eliminating cost and price disparities between mail – a public service in which the United States Postal Service (USPS) has a monopoly – and packages, where the private sector has given far superior service.

Amazon, NRF, Others Form Package Coalition Ahead of USPS Task Force Report
