Lisa Klebba, a resident of a tiny town in Michigan, received a pleasant surprise when she opened her mail one day and saw a gift from Kyrgyzstan.″I was thinking to myself, this is strange.Upon closer inspection, I saw that I had placed an order for something from China.
Despite the fact that it was from Kyrgyzstan, the box resembled one that she had previously received from China after placing an order on AliExpress.This led her to believe that it may have been a little dental gadget that she had ordered months earlier but hadn’t yet gotten.As a result, she opened the package only to realize that it was absolutely devoid of contents.I was thinking, holy cow, this is one of those things!″ she shouted when she saw there was nothing in it.Therefore, she began looking for hints on the internet as to why she could have been sent an empty package from Kyrgyzstan, and came across a piece I published for Forbes in 2017 about Heaven McGeehan, a Pennsylvania lady who receives unordered shipments from China on an almost regular basis: The contents of the box were a tiny handful of black hair ties with cheap plastic hearts with the word ″Phoenix″ inscribed on them, which she discovered when she opened it.She was really perplexed.

She had no idea about it, as evidenced by her silence ″″ she explained.The agent examined Blinn’s account and discovered that there was nothing incorrect with it.It is not against the law to provide clients merchandise that has not been requested.However, according to David Vladeck, a former head of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Protection and a law professor at Georgetown University, ″the has long gone after marketers that utilize phony reviews.″ Amazon states that it has a policy against vendors mailing unsolicited products to customers, and that sellers who violate this policy may be barred from selling on the site.An Amazon spokesperson stated in an email that ″Third-party sellers are prohibited from sending unsolicited packages to customers,″ and that ″we take action against those who violate our policies, including withholding payments, suspending or removing selling privileges, and working with law enforcement.″ Neither Amazon nor the Federal Trade Commission would reveal how many brushing scams had been discovered on the site or how many vendors had been removed as a result of these frauds.

Nicole expressed her hope that Amazon will do more to combat brushing and will prohibit sellers who are involved in the scams in the future. ″I just believe they need to be a little bit more concerned with closing down those businesses and making sure those merchants are unable to utilize the platform in the future.″

Bamboozled: Why a mystery package delivery could mean ID theft

A case we’ve been tracking since the summer, and now that the holidays are here – with tons of online shopping and brown boxes appearing on doorsteps – we expect more scams like this to spring up all over the place.The frightening issue is that, even if you don’t purchase online, there isn’t much you can do to prevent this from happening to you.Even when law enforcement makes an attempt, it is nearly hard to apprehend the perpetrator of the hoax.So, here’s what transpired.Fredrics acquired a $50 Cuisinart coffee machine from a vendor on eBay who had a flawless feedback rating, for a total cost of $50.Fredrics made the transaction on August 12 using PayPal.
On August 15, the package was delivered to Fredrics’ Park Ridge residence.Everything appeared to be in order.Two further deliveries were made to the residence in the early evening of August 19.The parcels came from Best Buy, and Fredrics’ wife, who received them, assumed they were products that her husband had bought from the company.Fredrics, on the other hand, was not anticipating any packages.
- ″When I opened the larger of the two packages, I was surprised to discover that it contained the exact same model of Cuisinart coffee maker that I had recently purchased on eBay and had received only a few days before,″ Fredrics explained.
- ″I was a little taken aback by the fact that it contained the exact same model of Cuisinart coffee maker that I had recently purchased on eBay and received only a few days before.″ When he woke up the next morning, his initial thought was that he had unintentionally put an eBay auction bid on a second coffee machine offered by Best Buy.
- He immediately reviewed his recent eBay, PayPal, and bank account activity.
- His investigation turned up no evidence of any other transactions that may have conceivably related to the purchase of an extra coffee machine, according to the results of his extensive investigation.
- He then proceeded to unwrap the smaller gift.
- In this case, it was a lightning cable for use with Apple goods.
However, because Fredrics did not utilize Apple goods, he was perplexed as to how the items had arrived at his door.He surmised that it was due to a processing error on the part of Best Buy, and he went on to do a bit more investigating.It seemed from the two packing slips that both transactions were made on Aug.13, the same day that he purchased something on eBay.Fredrics’ name and address were included in the letter, but they used a telephone number that was not his.He looked up the phone number on the internet and discovered that it belonged to someone in Rockaway.
A light bulb went out in my head.Although it was plausible that an apparently random order for a lightning cable from Best Buy had been shipped by mistake, the fact that a second shipment included the same coffee machine he had acquired on eBay looked much too serendipitous to be the result of a simple order processing error.In Fredrics’ opinion, ″it hinted that something more planned and potentially malicious was taking place, either involving the eBay seller or some other unconnected individual who discovered that I had acquired that specific coffee machine.″ There was something weird going on.DIVING DEEPER INTO THE OCEAN As a further step, Fredrics went to the Best Buy website and logged in as a guest using the order numbers and telephone numbers obtained on the packing slips.His eyes were drawn to two orders, both of which were placed using a Gmail email account that had a variant of his name but did not match his genuine email address.In addition, the order had the last four numbers of a Visa card that did not belong to Fredrics, which raised suspicions.
Other orders were shown on his account, including a two-year Geek Squad warranty and an extra cable, both of which were ready for pickup at the Best Buy in Paramus, New Jersey.The total cost of the items was $104.82.Fredrics was under the impression that his identity had been stolen.He first filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and then he phoned the Park Ridge Police Department to report the incident.
Fredrics stated that the officer with whom he spoke was really helpful, and that he recommended that Fredrics contact Best Buy and eBay.The perpetrators, according to Fredrics, ″were most likely planning to conduct a test to see if I would quickly retrieve items shipped to my address and left on my doorstep in order to locate an address where they could have larger and more expensive fraudulently-obtained merchandise shipped, which could then be retrieved from my doorstep by someone connected to the perpetrators, when they believed I wasn’t home.″ Fredrics made a phone call to Best Buy later that day.The representative confirmed that the credit card used to make the purchases was in fact in Fredrics’ name, and that Best Buy had access to the credit card number, the Internet protocol address used to make the payments, and other information that may assist authorities in locating the fraudster.The representative stated that she was unable to provide the information to Fredrics directly, but that Best Buy would provide the information to police upon request.
- In order for the police to make the request, she provided Fredrics precise instructions to pass along to them.
- Finally, the representative cancelled the store pickup item and instructed Fredrics to return the remaining things using a pre-paid label that the representative will mail to him.
- Fredrics reported the incident to the police after calling Equifax to obtain a 90-day fraud alert on his credit record.
- The information given by Best Buy assisted Fredrics in notifying the authorities.
- A few weeks later, Fredrics received a call from a detective informing him that the Bergen County prosecutor’s office had issued a subpoena to Best Buy.
Best Buy reacted by stating that it did not have any relevant information about the matter.This didn’t make any sense, according to Fredrics, because the representative was quite clear about the information Best Buy possessed and what the police had to do in order to obtain it.According to the attorney general, ″By refusing to cooperate with police investigations and instead denying that they even had any relevant information in their response to the subpoena, Best Buy is enabling the perpetrators of identity theft against its customers to continue their activities without being apprehended by law enforcement.″ Police were forced to shut the case, and it was at this point that Fredrics reached out to Bamboozled.
- THE NITTY GRITTY OF IT ALL We forwarded the information to Best Buy, which included the case numbers and order numbers.
- We contacted the Park Ridge police department while the issue was being investigated.
- Despite the fact that they were unable to examine Fredrics’ case in detail, Capt.
- Joseph Rampolla stated that identity theft instances occur on a daily basis, especially in tiny towns like Park Ridge.
- Then we received a call from Best Buy, and what they shared with us was a pleasant surprise.
- Is it possible that Best Buy was suppressing information?
- Was it possible that the information had gone from its servers?
Nope.The explanation for the company’s failure to comply with the subpoena was considerably more straightforward.It was only after comparing the notes and order numbers given by Bamboozled that Best Buy determined the order numbers on the subpoena were incorrect by one digit.
- That’s why Best Buy said that company didn’t have any documents to give.
- As a result, Best Buy requested that the prosecution re-file the subpoena.
